I took advantage of the excellent trade-in promotions last year for a 'free' iPhone 7 with Verizon, with 24 months of recurring credits offsetting the Device Payment Plan cost. I got my pre-order in for the iPhone X, but I had assumed I could just pay full price for it and swap SIM cards.

During the checkout, I was forced to type in my phone number and authenticate my plan with Verizon, and I got a message that I would have 10 months worth of Device Payment Plan payments added to my next bill. That obviously dramatically raises the cost of upgrading if I lose out on 10 months of recurring credits to offset those payments.

My reservation is for in-store pickup. How do I go about paying full price for the phone without 'activating' it on my account? I purchased an 8 unlocked and just swapped SIM cards, for example. My 7 is just sitting on the shelf.

How would one go about buying an iPhone X for a Christmas gift if you can't order one without tying it to your cellular account? (During the pre-order, I did choose "Buy a new iPhone" and not "Replace this iPhone", but it doesn't seem to have helped.)

Thanks guys! Hope everyone was successful getting their pre-orders in!
