I heard the same things from Nokia, Microsofts Steve Ballmer, Pebble's CEO and plenty of tablet manufacturers.

Gee where's Palm or Blackberry these days? - Once Apple enters your market, you better be innovating or you're gonna lose your market to them.

Don't think hardware, think software. Dropbox said iCloud drive wouldn't hurt their business and for the most part, he was right.

Mate... you are about to get smashed.

As if I wouldn't already be smashed; it's after 11am.

But thanks for the warning. I look forward to more comparing wild projections to reality and linear extrapolations of exponential growth, and of new products and old markets and all the condescending prickery that's launched a thousand startups that would change the world, straight into the sun.

It'll be like hearing it all for the first time again, hooray!

Don't need to guess so much. Last year Apple reported 12 million monthly users. It is growing exponentially and in the first quarter of this year hit around 36 million and is predicted to hit 86 million by end of this year, and that's with just a dozen or so countries on board. Merchant growth is also very strong with millions now on board and prediction of 50 to 65 percent by end of this year. Apple hasn't advertised heavily as they needed to get merchant and bank participation to a certain level to make it worthwhile. Somewhat of a chicken or egg problem, but you don't want to incentivize consumers to try it and get frustrated with little participation by banks or merchants.

I'm pretty sure Apple has most of the big banks in US. Basically that is the area where Apple needs to get it right and Apple Pay is ready as far as the banks are concerned in the U.S. The problem in the U.S. is that not that high a percentage of retail has the system set up to take NFC transactions. And also a lot of folks still haven't set up their phones for Apple Pay.

I think Apple has been slow on marketing because they knew the merchants weren't there. But peer to peer payment is going to help this a lot. I know I will be using it.

I try to avoid PayPal as much as I can since there is no way to get help and lose your money once a problem happens.

What is the TOS like for ApplePay Cash? And have you had many problems with PayPal? I imagine ApplePay Cash will be more like PayPal Gift where you're kind of on your own. For PayPal proper, I've only had one problem I can remember but was refunded after following the proper steps with no problems--there are, in fact, ways to get help.

100% of all Venmo transactions I've taken part in were all between iPhones.

Granted, I've only had two of them, but still. I'll probably use whatever Apple offers next time.

The Android users I know don't use Venmo.
Hmm, for some reason, almost everyone I know in/from college uses Venmo, as of 3 years ago. Not that I'm complaining. It's super convenient. I've even had someone pay me monthly rent through it.

PayPal, on the other hand, is the most overly complicated service I've ever attempted to use. Seems they're stuck in 2001. Also, I kept getting "unknown error"s trying to sign up for it until the 9th try, but then again I've had issues even signing up for Instagram (just to see what it was)

He has a point. Unless Apple opens up iMessage, things like sharing a bill in a restaurant with friends will rarely be possible for me with Apple Pay, since there are almost always people with Android phones in the group.
They haven't been opening it for a good reason: It would do nothing but make them lose money and customers. But now that it's starting to do more than messaging, they could have reasons to open it up if its usage will make them money.

Oh, I thought it would auto-merge the posts. Sorry.

The value proposition of forcing you to use their rip-off currency conversion? No thanks. PayPal is not your pal.

We'll see.
and in other news Apple user tries to make payment to friend but fails because they are all using Android.
I can imagine how this would go down at one of my team lunches and I tried to use Apple peer to peer payments - would be an epic fail.

PayPal has nothing to worry about.

I **might** use Apple Pay to send money. I would probably prefer it, but it is too limited to the Apple product line and I know people who are Android or computer only so this Apple concept has built in restrictions for me. I wish that there was a real universal program/app/hardware but Android doesn't want to lock security down that far, and I don't want Apple to open their security up to permit usage.

And as I said earlier, PayPal is not an option I am willing to consider. I think Android is too cavalier with security but PayPals record of security makes Android look good.

So none of your friends have iPhones? I guess this service will be useless to you then realistically.

Will be interesting to see the impact this AP feature does have regardless.

What do you think about other mobile payments applications like Moneymailme? It has no fees for transactions and you can do them instantly.

Nope, they all have a mix of samsung and sony in my team. As for friends, most don't have iPhones.
I think outside the states the ratio is a lot lower.
