Someone please tell me what Apple was thinking, offering only 2 USB ports on the Powerbook. Especially due to the fact that most laptop manufacturers have at least 6 on theirs.

I am sure there MUST be some good reason for this poor implementation.
 
Firewire 400 & 800, PC Card Slot, Modem, Ethernet, S-Video, DVI... all take up space dude. If you have a ton of USB devices just get a hub. 😛
