free wifi at apple stores! ;)
Would it be safe to activate it there though?

If you set up an iCloud account, then that overnight syncing is done over WiFi to an Apple Server, not your computer. Your thinking of Over-the-air syncing, which is done locally between your iPhone and your computer, but only when you want to add new media/apps to your device like you do now, but without the USB cable.

and like andythursby said, Free WiFi at the Apple Store.
Ah okay, didn't know about that, now I'm excited about all these PC free features. :D

No you're wrong. The US is the only country in the world where the iPhone is sold by only one GSM carrier. All other countries sell iPhones through multiple carriers and are thus all unlocked. I'm pretty sure the AT&T iPhone is the only locked iPhone in the world.

Nope. In Portugal the iPhone is sold locked even though it's available in 3 different carriers. You can get unlocked iPhones for about 200 euros more but the standard way for the iPhone to be sold is locked.

But saying that if I were to purchase the iPhone 5 or so at launch I would need a sim card ready to activate it with?

well if you're getting a new contract, you'd get a sim with it, if you're on an existing contract you just swap the sims. dunno how it works there, but that's how it is here
