PC help for a friend

Sorry for the lack of details and I know nothing about PCs. Does this sound like a virus problem?

Both PC and laptop are running slow and he gets a blue screen for a few seconds and then it boots to the desktop. I had sent him the a link for AVG Anti-Virus but when he clicks on the links, it is so slow that it doesn't want to do anything. I told him to wait a while and if the program finally comes up, to run it. But if that doesn't work, anything else you can suggest? He also said the email is slow when he tries to bring it up.

Put a copy of an antivirus app onto a thumb drive for him, and boot up the computer into safe mode.

Thanks for the tip. Can you please provide some details on how to do this? Sorry PCs aren't me!!

get the .exe file from the avg site, then when it asks where to install, instal it in a folder that u made on a flashdrive. then give the drive to ur friend,have him run avg off the drive.
