PCIx slots - which are 16?

Everymac says that Apple says that are all mechanically able to handle 16 lanes, just curious if this translates to performance or if it really should be in a certain slot. Thanks!

The bottom two slots are 16x PCIe. If I remember correctly PCIx slots were in some G5's.
