Mywi is great, but I can't spend $20 on something I wouldn't use very often. I'd buy it if it was $10.

I am in otal agreement with you. I haven't bought it yet. I downloaded it when I needed it and used the free trial. $9.99 would be a much better, and more fair, in my opinion, price.

I concur it's great--I use everyday, one of my most-used apps. Since I do a lot of work in parks, trains, riverbanks, non-WiFi cafes, etc., I'd pay 40 bucks for it. I "waste" more than its cost nearly daily.;)

Tried installing and setting up Mywi today, but it wouldn't connect to the internet on my macbook or ipad.

Installed PDANET and it worked right out of the box as a wifi hotspot, although it looks like it only allows 1 device to be connected to wifi. PDANET is my choice so far. We will see how the 14 day trial goes.

We know their functions are nearly the same, but how about battery consumption?! That's a vital part of my decision process...

I believe PDAnet sets up an ad-hoc network, so if you only want to run 1 device off your tether, that will work great. But with MyWi, it sets your iphone or ipad up as a true hotspot, so you can connect multiple devices at once.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

No, you're right! :D

And thats why MyWi is the best, connect any device you want too.

For some reason, I cannot install pdanet. Tried the free and paid version, and my iphone didn't boot after either time. Had to restore my iPhone.

I tried them both this morning, each one worked perfectly.

sadly, not something I'm going to use very often and so $20 is a bit too much. I'd prefer to find something cheaper that I can simply use with a cable...I think someone suggested tetherme..I'll have a search

They call it "hotspot" but it is only an ad-hoc connection, I was unable to connect more than 1 client (not really a hotspot)

Yep. I just tried connecting my mini and my mbp to pdanet. It's just an ad-hoc network and whatever machine connects second steals the IP from the first (192.168.19.2). What a bummer.

You can also see the pdanet network is listed separately and below true infrastructure mode wireless networks.

Not only that.. you get your very own private network router. YOu can access all your computers (provided windows or whatever is setup properly) without a hitch!!!!

That comes handy some times!

As of now, they are both ad-hoc. An ad-hoc network can have several devices connected simultaneously. The 1 device limit is a PDANet DHCP restriction. An ad-hoc network is peer-to-peer since no device "owns" the network. The down side is that once you turn off the "hotspot" the other devices may still think that they connected.
Infrastructure is apparently being worked on for MyWi.

I've tried both and stayed with PDANet

I decided to download the trial version of MYWI so that I could compare it to PDANet. I've had PDANet for quite a while (18 months) and paid a steep $29 for the license. When I downloaded MYWI it required me to delete PDANet and then it installed quite a few support files/programs along with the main APP. Anyway, the new version of PDANet couldn't be easier. When you're in wireless tether mode you can vary the signal output to minimize battery drain. I did notice that this new version of PDANet has much better power management than version 1.6. I have no idea why the version numbers changed so much. If anything, the new version of PDANet is more like a 2.0 As mentioned previously in this thread, they are both adhoc and not a true WIFI hotspot. Both APPS connect via the same exact method when you're not using the USB tether mode. I conducted a little test and the data speed is higher when tethered via USB (both APPS). Both APPs speed vary by very little. There was no clear winner so your ultimate decision should be based on stability. I found PDANet to be rock solid when tethered. There is a known bug when using their version of HOTSPOT. What will happen is that the iPhone with respring arbitrarily. I had numerous issues with MYWI. I was trying to use their HOTSPOT mode and utilize my wifi connection to bridge to my MBP. I never succeeded. Bottom line, PDANet is still my choice and once they sort out the bug with 4.18 it should be an excellent choice for your tethering needs. My email to PDANet yielded their acknowledgement regarding the bug and it will be fixed in 4.19. No ETA on the fix.

If you tried both you'd have noticed that MyWi also does that and has had that feature for a long time.

have both - vote for Pdanet

I have both of these apps and while mywifi gets more press and has wizzy bangy interface, for functionality PdaNet gets my vote. My reason is every time there is a new firmware update on my iphone or ipad mywifi stops working.

Now eventually mywifi issues update and I get it back but in the mean time I without hotspot for my iPad. I just updated to 4.2.1 and did greenposi0n JB and my ipad would not work - everything looks like it connects, but when trying to browse you get message that it is not connected to internet).

So I did as I have done in the past and uninstalled mywifi and installed Pdanet as usual everything just works. I get lured by all the new features ( wifi on demand) that MyWifi keeps adding but I have decided to stay with Pdanet as I need something that works all the time.

I am sure there are folks that have never had any issues with MyWifi but this is my experience (and yes in the past I contacted mywifi support and got lots of "try this try that" with no resolution).

This is a joke sentence, right? A new firmware update on your iPhone or iPad removes the jailbreak. And the simple solution is, do not upgrade your firmware until MyWi supports it.

PDAnet

Just try PDAnet it's free, if it does what you need your a winner. That's my answer and I'm sticking with it.

That may be, but look at their websites... I don't mean to judge people by the quality of their site, but junefabrics.com looks a bit like a GeoCities site. It seems like a company dedicated to making internet tethering apps could put a little more thought into their website.

Are you kidding, that site must have taken at least 2 hours to make
