Okay, Easy solution.

In bottom right, instead of showing as small, medium or large, you must say Show actual size. This will keep the attachment as a .pdf or whatever.

I don't know how to do either of these. I'm about to give up on it, and through this great dialogue (so helpful to me!) I've discovered I can send them from Web Mail at Earthlink. At least now I can get them where they need to go!

I don't mind trying these two ideas, but please be more specific and very detailed, as I am in the First Grade with this part of things.

Other things to try (not sure if you've done already):

1) Try a new email client with the same email account (e.g. Thunderbird)

2) Try a new email account with the same mail client (e.g. set up Google Mail)

Good grief! How in the world did you figure this out??? And did you know it all this time, or just start messing around with things? EUREKA! It WORKS!

To all the good folks who've stuck with me on this at MacRumors:Forums I say "thank you so much." No one was sarcastic or treated me in any way like I was stupid, just ignorant of what to do. My gratitude to all.

Now you can help me... at the "bottom right" of what??

EDIT: Just found this setting... which in years of use, I never noticed!

All this time, I've just been purposely checking the "Small Size" instead of "Actual Size" just because it seemed redundant and a waste of space to have a huge file show in the email when that's not where it's going to be used. Ah well, live and learn.

Well, I just ran into this problem yesterday, and a google search found that you were also seeing the same problems. I just started trying everything I could think of, until I stumbled upon the solution.

I still think it's a bug with Mac Mail software (at least it's not obvious what to do). I'll try to figure out how to submit a defect report to Apple, so maybe they'll fix it. :)

Glad I was able to help,
Xykon

Will someone enlighten me as to where this "bottom right" is?

Perhaps it doesn't exist in Leopard's version of Mail.

Bottom right: When I am in Mail and have attached a pdf to my email, at the very bottom of my mail screen (on the right) is a little box that says "Actual size" (this is apparently the default size), but there is a little box next to those words that I can click to make the IMAGE of the PDF (which is now visible in the body of the email) medium sized or small sized.

I'd be curious to know if Leopard does NOT have this option and if, when you attach a PDF, it actually gets sent as a PDF.

I don't see anything..

Thanks for the solution.

However, I would beg to differ on this being a bug, or as Microsoft would say an enhancement. ;)

When you step back and look at it, the idea makes sense. The problem for the user is not knowing about this feature. What would be useful is to default to the normal size. Then if the user selects other than normal, a warning dialog displays and explains that the file will be changed to a jpg and reduced in quality. Does the user want to do this? Cancel/OK. This would eliminate confusion.

I agree, this is not a "bug," but the implementation is a bit obscure. I'm not sure I like the pop-up dialog box solution, though. A more Apple-like solution would be to include the important information in the pop-up selection itself (Small - Convert to JPEG). Incidentally, if you select one of the reductions, the attached file shows up in the draft e-mail with a jpeg extension, but you can only easily know this if you show the attachment as an icon, an action which itself cannot be set as the default behavior.

Just to clarify (because I think some of the forum members including myself are a not clear on this) are you running Leopard or Tiger or Panther?
The image size adjustment for PDF's is not in Leopard's mail but when I was running Tiger it was there. It's still resides there when sending JPEG's but not for PDF's.

You Are All Awesome

I had the same problem and went googling for the answer and came upon this forum. I will try the keep actual size default for the pdf attachement.
Much thanks for both the original question and the many helpful members for answering it.
- I am new to this forum and excited about hanging out and learning her.
thanks again.

Drummergirl, I was really impressed by how helpful everyone was to me about this issue. Folks were polite and seemingly eager to help. The solution of keeping the pdf "actual size" works like a charm every time.

Best,

works - my gosh it works! pdf actual size keeps pdf from converting to jpg

It did work just fine Amy
Keeping the pdf the actual size allows the pdf to remain a pdf, this is such a life saver... far too much time in frustration trying to figure this out... and then this forum! 0 Yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee - thanks forum mates! you rock!

pack it

Put the file in a new folder and drag it to the email. The PDF stays intact in the folder.

PDF attached to outgoing email automatically converts to JPG

When you attach your mail, make sure the image size is set as "Actual Size" in the window when you are adding your attachment. You will see this setting when you attach your files in the lower right hand corner of that window. If the image size is set for small it will automatically attache them as jpgs. I had the same thing happen to my pdfs.
