PDFs don't display - black screen

My Macbook Pro 2.53 Intel Core i5 running OS 10.6.5 suddenly won't display downloaded PDF files - they just show up as an all-black screen. I downloaded Adobe Reader and that doesn't help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!🙁
