Pebble today announced the Pebble Index 01, a simple smart ring that's designed for recording information. It is equipped with a microphone and a button to start a recording, but little else.

Priced at $75, the Index 01 does not require an internet connection or a subscription, and it doesn't record unless the button is pressed. Recordings are sent to a connected smartphone, and can be saved as a note, added to a calendar, or set as a reminder. Information is processed by open source speech-to-text and AI models locally on an iPhone or Android smartphone.

It is customizable, and single or double button clicks can be set to control different actions like switching to a new song, taking a photo, or activating smart home devices.

The device is made from stainless steel, and it is available in three colors, including silver, gold, and black. Sizes range from 6 to 13. It is resistant to water, and no charging is necessary. Pebble says the battery will last for 12 to 15 hours of recording, which equates to 10-20 recordings per day that are 3-6 seconds in length. Since there is no replaceable battery and no option to charge, the ring is meant to be recycled when the battery dies.

The Pebble Index 01 is priced at $75 and is available for pre-order from the Pebble website. It will ship in March 2026, and after that, the price will increase to $99.

Ridiculous. And the video thumbnail makes it even worse. You didn't create external memory for your brain, it's called a notepad. Or about a million other things. No one needs a disposable recorder ring.

But this seems to be from the same brilliant guy that brought us Beeper hacking iMessage and somehow successfully making Apple look like the bad guy, so apparently this guy can sell any dumb idea.

Got a notepad and pencil for $50, batteries last as long as you, 50 page memory and stylus is user replaceable. :p

I dislike the idea of having to throw away a device because the battery is dead.

But I DO like the idea of having a spy-ring (with a decent microphone) available for recording the cop who pulls me over (or comes to my front door) and starts asking me unconstitutional questions.

What recycling company will bother to disassemble this tiny product to separate its components?

If there is no way to detach the minuscule internal battery, then this goes straight to the landfill.

Definitely limited use cases for this one.

10 year old me would have though this was the coolest spy toy, today not so much.

I love that the Pebble watch is back (even though I use an apple watch), but they now diversifying into doing a ring? Looks kind of cool take on it and all, but it would be way better if they just focus 100% on doing one thing successful: the Pebble watches. Smart rings are a too small and niche market, no value there for them IMO

A "spy toy", written on a website that is dedicated to the company that made smartwatches a thing and is working towards AR glasses? And you guys are worried that landfills are going to take a hit from plastic rings?? Honestly weak rationalizations to hate this gadget.

The value here seems to be that you can take notes as long as your thumb and index finger are free, even if you are doing something with your hands (e.g. driving). Moving thoughts into your inbox with little friction is a good thing (remember when GTD was a big thing in the OS X world?); it's a focused niche device, why not.
