I too think this is going to be a great tool for children's education. My 2 year old son, love to play with his "apple" as he calls it, which is really just a iPhone 3G that we have as surplus once we got the 3GS. We have been using it as an iPod for music in the house, when we thought maybe he could use it.

Here's a free tip for you. You can sell an iPhone 3G for $300 + on eBay. That will pay for a very large portion of the cost of an iPad.

Apple deciding what books can be published = VERY VERY BAD

AldenShaw hallucinating again = Priceless

Who says Apple will control what books can be published? Do you think that the iPad will be the only route to market?

Furthermore, iTunes already has a far wider selection of music than Amazon or anyone else out there. Why would Apple be more restrictive of books than they are of music?

Now they are cookin with Crisco. The other ebooks thus far were baked instead of fried and used healthy unsaturated fat oils. This ebook tastes better!:D

Did anyone notice he talks about a GPS and compass ... neither of which is a featured in the currently announced specs? We all believe that it eventually should have these features, but they talked about those features like they were there already.

Ummm ... I don't know what specs you are referring to, but both models of the iPad (Wifi and 3G) have assisted GPS (like the iPhone) and compass. The only real technical shortcoming I've heard discussed is the lack of any sort of camera, or USB ports, etc ...

The WiFi model has wifi location and compass.

The 3G model adds GPS and cell-tower location.

Location
  • Wi-Fi
  • Digital compass
  • Assisted GPS (Wi-Fi + 3G model)
  • Cellular (Wi-Fi + 3G model)

Raising kids on electronics devices is not any better than raising kids on TV. My kids are going to go outside and be interactive with friends and learn to use their hands and imagination on a playground. I thought pre-school taught kids about the alphabet and simple spelling. Your idea of how the iPad will be good for kids is the exact reason why this world has less and less human interaction, which is why too many kids text message each other constantly and stay on Facebook from sun up to sun down. Just my opinion.
I for one whole heartedly agree with you.

It's a pain to to pry some people off of a computer or phone to talk to, step outside, or read a book.

I'm now laughing at every naysayer that registered on this forum just to crap on the iPad. This device is getting so much support from 3rd party developers and it's getting so much press before it even hits the streets. The iPad hit a home run and the naysayers can't handle it. :D Funny I never heard anything about the HP tablet after Emballmer's boring presentation.

People are going to change their minds once they see all the new applications that will be coming out. But you're right; the device seems to have already attracted a strong support from a variety of developers. Looking forward to all the new ideas about how this device could be used.

Just previewing the sort of apps and content that are going to be available for the iPad makes me wonder if we're seeing the first steps towards something like "The Young Lady's Illustrated Primer" from "The Diamond Age"...

Or sell them on Craigslist quicker and for more money
