People working with AVCHD files

I am using a dual core 2009 imac with 8gb ram. Using Adobe Premiere CC the playback stutters but if I render the timeline than it plays back smooth for previewing and editing.

The best practice for video editing is to have your footage on a second drive and not on your system drive.

A free software for converting files is Mpeg streamer that works well for most file conversions to Quicktime.

Hope this helps,
Kdawg

Working with AVCHD multicam clips was the reason I upgraded my old Macbook Pro to the recent model. Even without using proxy media everything was running impressively smoothly and I was thrilled my new laptop is so powerful.

BUT, then last night I was editing a new project and I noticed transcoding was going on forever in the background - I am assuming it was the multicam clip that was being transcoded overnight, and then this morning when I wanted to continue the project, everything is extremely choppy. I tried a bunch of the common tricks to make it run smoothly, nothing is working on that particular edit. Although if I start from scratch with the same multicam clip it's fine. Maybe it has something to do with my external harddrive, I don't know. If anybody has some experience on this matter, I'm all ears - not intending to hijack the thread, though.

edit: BTW, I'm using FCPX
