The check box to turn on and off read receipts for each conversation is missing. I checked on several iMessage conversations (Not SMS texts) with different people and it doesn't show on any of them. This is the per conversation setting so for example I could have read receipts off for my brother but on for my mom. I've tried turning on and off read receipts for everyone but that does nothing to make this checkbox appear. I'm sure I'm just missing an obvious prerequisite setting because this would be a weird bug.

This was working on my iMac but it's not showing on my MacBook Air. Both are macOS Monterey. I sold my iMac so don't have it to compare settings.

Here's the Apple support page and what I'm talking about is the part below "Send read receipts for one conversation"

Here's the only check boxes I have

You should be able to scroll down further within that window to see 'Send read receipts' and also 'Share focus status'

Thanks so much! I knew it was something obvious. I don't remember having to scroll on the iMac but maybe because of the screen size or maybe my memory is bad 🤣

I think the settings might have been synced on iCloud from my iPhone or maybe it's a general setting across iMessage because the per contact settings I had before on my iMac and what's on my iPhone now were already set. I set this Mac up as a new computer so it wasn't cloned from the iMac.

Yes, it isn't clear that there are more options available if you scroll down. It's an unfortunate consequence of the hidden scroll bar approach. Perhaps they should add a little arrow to the bottom or '...' to indicate there's more further down. Anyway, glad it worked!

That's why I always set Show Scroll Bars to Always. Perhaps I am simply forced to use Windows too much, so I'm used to having them always be visible.
