People are using Premiere on much worse hardware. If you think the $250 is high, then it probably isn't a great choice for you.

250 is high for 300mhz I'd say. But don't really know the real life differences. Actually I'm used to editing on my Air (1.8 i5, 8gb RAM), so I'm guessing any high-end Mac will make a difference.

So the general consensus seems to just get the base model and forget about the 300mhz?

Do what feels right to you. If you feel the $250 is too much for 300MHz, then you have your answer. And, since you are asking this question, it seems you already know the answer.

Nobody can tell you what to do. I purchased the 2.5 and didn't give a second thought to the 300MHz.

My reasons:

  1. Basically throwing money away as it won't be recouped when selling.
  2. Didn't want to wait.
  3. As a developer and designer, the extra speed wasn't going to make me more money.

Those are my reasons, yours are obviously not going to be the same.

Yeah, you're right. I'm still a student and finishing my degree within a year, so I need a laptop with plenty of power. When I'm done I'll have a desk and more money to put in a powerful iMac/MacPro at that time.

Honestly I'd of course want the most powerful, but Apples seems greedy and every little configuration costs a lot. I'm in no doubt that the 0.3ghz will be faster in some ways, but not sure if I'll appreciate it - for the extra cost that is. and you're right about the reselling value. Every time I've sold a mac with special confics buyers don't seem to care one bit about 'em. They just want it cheap.

I'm gonna save the 250$ and buy the high-end stock, and throw the rest of the money at a iPhone 6 :D

why $250? difference is $200, and if you are a student it's $180. Where did you guys see $250?

I'm from Europe, and just converted our prices to dollars. The final price (for me with discount) comes out to just under 3000$ with the 2.5ghz

The CPU upgrade costs exactly 237,79$ - for me with all possible discounts..

Wow! That's a big difference in conversion...

battery life

I am having the same 2.5 v 2.8 dilemma for my second rMBP.

I mainly use Adobe Lightroom, to edit raw images, which I guess is reasonably demanding, but not crazily so.

Two questions (1 is the most important):

1. Will the 2.8 use more battery or, when running off battery, does the computer throttle it down so that you get as much battery life as you would with 2.5?

2. I bought a 15 inch rMPG with 500GB ssd and 2.5 processor a month ago. It runs Lightroom far faster than my old computer and certainly fast enough. Even so, there is occasionally a short pause while it applies an edit (e.g. increased contrast) so it occurs to me that when I buy my next one today (I needed two, one for my wife) I might go for the 2.8 just in case it would cope as image sizes became bigger and more demanding over the next few years. Do you think it would make a difference?

Thanks lots

David

Ooops, meant rMBP not rMBG!
