It's a preference pane

There's two ways to solve this issue.

First, open System Preferences, click the Perian option down the bottom and disable the updates checkbox.

Second, which is what I did, is to just uninstall and remove the preference pane altogether.

I found that this annoying error message just kept popping-up, even though the mac wasn't connected to a network. The writers of the app should add a little intelligence to the app to prevent this happening ;) Something along the lines of "If no net connection then don't keep checking for updates!"

:D
