Every 30mins to an hour, there is a brief flicker that appears. Kinda like a power fluctuation or some static electricity. It is frequent enough to be quite distracting and annoying, especially considering I have a brand new Mac Pro 2009 (<2mo) and a relatively new Dell 30 monitor (<6mo old).

It just occurred to me that the problem initially wasn't there and started showing up ~2 weeks ago. This was exactly at the time that I got the mini Displayport to HDMI adapter to try to connect the second display to my LCD TV. When I did this however, eveytime I turned the TV on, there would be a significant flicker on my monitor just like turning off the monitor and turning it on after a few seconds. So I gave up on using the second display and tossed the displayport-hdmi cable out and now its no longer connected. However I now keep getting this periodic flicker on my monitor.

Get yourself as short a DVI cable as possible and give that a try. The static I've been getting has only appeared when I've used DVI extension cables (since the 30" ACD cable is fixed). It got worse when I used a longer extension cable compared to a shorter one. I'm not waiting on a 50cm extension instead to see if that will work. Since I think the Dell 30" panels come with a removable DVI cable, see if you can get a shorter cable. I know its a long shot but its worth a try.

DVI specifications says that a 1920x1200 signal can be sent over cables up to 4.5m in length. 15m for 1280x1024. It doesn't say what length 2560x1600 can be sent over but it stands to reason that it would be shorter than 1920x1200. Maybe the DVI signals sent out by 4870 cards is comparatively weak and so some signal degradation's occuring and giving you this flicker. Like I said, its a long shot though.

sjivan, my flicker symptoms are exactly like yours. The flicker is so brief it's hard to say exactly what appears, but I think it's pink static.

I am not using the Dell-provided dual-link DVI cable. I'm using a shorter 3rd party one I bought and used before with my old 24" lcd -- no flicker. So I don't think blaming the longer Dell cable is it.

I wonder if adding a UPS to the equation would fix the flicker. Maybe a 30" LCD just draws alot of power, and maybe a UPS would help against line noise and kind of regulate the power the monitor is receiving?

What kind of flicker are you talking about? I've recently noticed some speckled noise appearing in areas of black on my 30" ACD and a 4870.

I have both 30 ACDs plugged into my newly acquired 4870, (obviously) one with DVI direct and the other via MDP DL adapter. I have made a 1600 x 1600 black square in photoshop on the display hooked via the adapter. will see if i get any flicker issues

Are you getting flickers on both ACDs or just the one hooked into the mDP - dual link DVI?

My 30 ACD hooked directly via the DVI port on the 4870 seems to work fine.

I have a 2008 MP, flashed ATI 4870, 3007WFP-HC and I get the flicker too. It didn't flicker when I had my 2600XT in there, so I know its the ATI 4870. I think it's the drivers. I have yet to upgrade to 10.5.7 though . . . My 2nd display is a 20" Dell, no flicker noticeable.

Are you guys that are also experiencing the flicker issue by any chance using the USB ports in the monitor?

I removed all USB connections and attached my keyboard and mouse directly to the desktop and flicker seem to have reduced (or even gone away). I haven't had it running now for long enough to confirm its gone but thought I'd check with you guys as well.

Is anyone experiencing the flicker issue and not using the USB ports of the monitor?

I'm having the same issue with an Apple supplied x1900XT and Dell 3007WFP. It only happens once a week or less so it's not really a big deal. The monitor looks and works just fine. FYI.

P.S. I'm not using the USB in the monitor since Mac won't sleep with it.

I have not noticed any flickering as yet on either ACD. I did a whole bunch of display battering esp on the MDP DL connected display like rotating 180 degrees, zooming in and out of a black image and photoshop rendering with a 2 GB file, expose etc.. no ill effects. will keep monitoring.

is there a technique or method which brings on the flickering?

its not the monitor, it's the card.

around 2006 me and my partner each bought a 1st gen mac pro with apple cinema 30"

mine was stock (nvidia 7300, 1g RAM), she ordered the ATI x1900x and more RAM.

since day one she has had the same flicker. its a flash of white static every 5-15 minutes, like something is resetting or flashing on and off. Happens in windows or os x.

my machine has been rock solid.

is this happening to anyone with a newer nvidia card (gtx 200 series)?

pink static effected by contrast

I have some mild pink static on my lcd screen that changes as the contrast changes. the pc is a hp compaq presario 6000. I have tried changing the dvi wire, turned off the system, all the monitor settings, unpluging the graphics card (a 512 mb nividea card) and reattaching it, but the only thing that effects it is the changing of the contrast.

I had this problem before and fixed it but can't remember what i did i thought it was a program that reset stuff but can't remember

My new Dell 3007WFP-HC also has the flicker. I just got it three days ago to replace a dead (14 months old!) Gateway XHD3000. So far, I've noticed the flicker once or twice a day every day. The XHD3000 and a 22" Acer did not have the flicker problem. I used the same dual link DVI cable with all three monitors, which were all plugged into my UPS.

The machine is an early 2009 Mac Pro with ATI 4870.
The flicker happens regardless of whether the USB is connected or not.

I'll have to see if I can locate a shorter DVI cable to see if than solves the problem.

Cheers!

+1

+1 on the flickr issue and my 2009 Quad MP w/ATI 4870, in a 24" HP w2408... it happens every once in a while - once or twice a day for brief moments. If I move the main window on that display a bit, it stops. I'll see if the same happens in the 2nd display hooked to the same 4870 card.

Seems to be a Dell - Apple issue.

I've got a 30" ACD (DVI) and a 20" Dell (miniDP) connected to a 4870 (Apple stock) and a few weeks ago I too noticed some flickers on the Dell display.

Doesn't seem to be a software issue since restarting didn't solve the problem, I had to disconnect the Dell display.

I have a 30" Dell 3007WFPHC connected to a 2008 Mac Pro through a stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 (dual link DVI). I'm having the same flickering problem, and was considering replacing the monitor as I'm covered until 2012. It didn't occur to me that it could be anything but a failing panel, but what I read here resonates with my experiences. Has anyone found more insight into this issue?

Seems to be a Dell - Apple issue.

IMO it's not really clear what the cause is... issue is also present in both my HP w2408 displays. Also presented itself on a 24" 245BW Samsung Syncmaster while I did some tests. An ATI card - OSX or MP issue cannot be discarded yet.

I currently have an nVidia GTX 285 and have the flicker, so I don't think it's an ATI issue.

I have this issue with my early 2009 Mac Pro with 4870 and my 24" Apple LED Cinema Display.

It only occurs in OS X and the display goes black for about 1.5 seconds and comes back on again. When it comes back on, the computer can be heard making a quiet whirring noise.

I have a 2009 Mac Pro octo with an ATI 4870 card hooked to my 30" Dell monitor. For the past week or so I see periodic flickers. I happens every 20-30 minutes but it happens on a regular basis. The monitor is only 4 months old and worked really well on my Dell machine. Any idea where the problem could reside?

i have the same problem. i thought it was my mini display port to dual-link dvi adapter, but i guess i was wrong. maybe it is the 4870. i run two 30" apple cinema displays with this video card.

It's not the Mac Pro. I was using a 22" display for 6 months and it never flickered. When I switched to the Dell (mine's a 3007WFP-HC), that's when I first noticed it. At first it was maybe once a week, but now it's probably twice a day... and i'm at the computer alot. It could be progressively getting worse. I'll probably try my luck with Dell's advance-replacement warranty before the 1-year is up. Hopefully the replacement doesn't have dead pixels.

I doubt it's the Mac Pro. I'm using an Apple 4870 on a 2009 Mac Pro 8-core too and it works great driving two Apple 30" ACD's. I do get flickering on the #2 monitor when it goes black while I'm watching a full screen video playing on the other monitor, and occasionally I get the "green pixel syndrome" on that monitor while in Windows 7 and gaming on the other monitor.

How are you connecting to the second 30" ACD? With the mDP - Dual link DVI adapter from Apple?
