I believe i have found a way to solve the OS X self assigned ip problem. I am pretty sure that anybody who uses time machine has an instant and foolproof way to fix the problem. It's actually very simple. All you have to do is restore a past version of the folder named: "SystemConfiguration" located in Macintosh HD>library>Preferences. I believe that whatever files that are altered when this phenomenom takes place are located in the folder "SystemConfiguration." This fix should be permanent, as opposed to many which are temporary.

Has anyone else used this fix?

I hope this tip can help all who have this problem. :)

Hi, yes I just tried restoring an old version of the folder from before I was having the problem - and still getting the same error. (I also tried adding a new location after restoring the old file and still no luck. This is a night mare which Mac should be ashamed of!).
