Permissions Problems

Recently my work computer had to be reformatted. So you think having a clean system=clean files. Guess wrong, before my computer got formated I had alot of problems with permissions. I was unable to use Mac OSX programs inclusing Utilities to fix permission. Symptoms was the program will hang when i open it causing the computer fans to start up real fast and loud. Well after talking to people I was recommended Cocktail.

Having cocktail was great since it fixed the problem of permissions and 40% of programs where working. Now another problem came, when I reboot the computer the problem started again. So what I did was program Cocktail to run at end of business day and auto shut down the computer so the following day my apple is running smoothly.

I solved the problem from that.

But now that my computer has been cleaned out. I want to know how is this problem happening. I have Mac OS X 10.3 with most recent updates.

I just want to inform myself why this is happening. I fixed the problem the best I can by running cocktail daily.

Cocktail uses the same basic facility to repair permissions as Disk Utility.

I think you need to detail what exactly you're attempting to do and what is happening. Are you trying to use Disk Utility to repair permissions on your boot drive? And what do the logs (/Applications/Utilities/Console.app to view) say when you try to do this? How was your OS reinstalled? Was it a clean reinstall of the OS, or was it cloned onto a reformatted disk (therefore probably reinheriting the problem from the original install)?

Programs I have most problems when opening them the programs just hangs and the fans start acting up. I have to force quit.

Programs I can recall
Safari
Disk Utilities
I Movie and I photo

I did a clean install, and in the installation of the OS I did the erase with Zeros and 7 times rewrite to make a complete and absolute clean install.

I tried Console thing and now everything is working fine, which is very wierd. Now I got something to look into. Iam going to test this console out see if other information may appear. (this part I cant address so I will need to work on this or test it out when i know the programs I listed are not functioning)

Ok I tried doing the Permissions when my programs where hanging and not loading. Then i open console and that program freezes up on me. Then i get the loud fan noise which happens with all the programs I try to open.

Anyone know what may be. I hope my company buys the new Mac OS X I think the one I have is prob bad system disk. The Dvd Player doesnt even work or the DVD Rom doesnt work but I can burn and read fine.

last 2 things to try and be sure:

Log in as another user (create one if need be) and test those apps. Do they exhibit the same problems?

You're not using any UI "enhancements" like haxies from Unsanity or anything that uses APE or shapeshifter, correct?

Tried another log In account and everything seemed to work fine.

And no i dont yes those types of programs since this is my work computer.

Well, though I implied it when I asked if the install was a clone, I guess I never specifically stated it, but...

Is your user data, in the login that is causing trouble, the same user data that you were using earlier when you were having troubles? As in, was the ~/Library/ copied back to your current (troubled) user?

Or is this (currently troubled) user completely fresh & clean, no files from the previous problematic user, and just magically started having troubles?

Yup second one, i thought fresh install would do the thing, but I have done so many fresh installs thinking it would resolve the problem but I am always stuck with the permissions problems, the only way i was able to fix this problem was by running cocktail end of work day so by tomorrow the computer is running smoothly. Nothing what so ever is being tranferred since I have an external Hard drive with my designs, but they are all Adobe/images files. Thats about it. And my user account is the same as before meaning the log in name and pass but I never saved the User information to the clean system.

Well, what you describe is definitely NOT normal operating procedure for Mac OS X. Is this Mac part of Open Directory or Active Directory? e.g., Does it authenticate your username/password against a non-local source?

well what I understood was that if my apple connects to a network, which is does but its a PC only network and I got in bec my network port wasnt blocking Apple. Was that what you where asking?

But no one can access my Apple since everyone has PC and highly protected with firewalls and stuff IT people here really make sure people dont do bad things while at work

OR you might want to upgrade to tiger and do an archive and install, it installs fresh new system but keeps all your files.

No. I wanted to know if your work computer was authenticating against an outside source or if your account was completely local. Networks don't make a difference here.

At this point all I can suggest is that there's an hardware issue. I'd suggest that you try and download and run memtest to test your RAM.
