Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller and his wife Kim have donated $10 million to Bowdoin College's Coastal Studies Center on Harpswell Sound in Harpswell, Maine, as a user on Reddit pointed out today. In a press release, Bowdoin explained that the gift will allow it to "substantially expand" the facilities in which students perform ocean research and study environmental education.

Specifically, Bowdoin said that thanks to the gift from the Schillers, the college will be able to add a state-of-the art dry laboratory, convening center, modern classrooms, and housing and dining facilities.
"This extraordinary act of generosity and vision by Phil and Kim Schiller will transform the Coastal Studies Center into a facility where students and faculty from Bowdoin and from other institutions can gather together for concentrated periods to learn from each other and to advance knowledge and understanding about the ocean, marine science and the impact of climate change on marine life."
Phil Schiller explained the family's donation in a video shared recently by Bowdoin, citing the college's efforts in developing new methods to research and fight against pollution, climate change, and other environmental issues. Schiller himself was born on the east coast in Natick, Massachusetts and graduated with a B.S. in Biology from Boston College. One of his sons, Mark, graduated from Bowdoin earlier in 2017.

In response to the $10 million donation, Bowdoin has named the center the "Schiller Coastal Studies Center (SCSC)." The SCSC is located on 118 acres of land that occupies 2.5 miles of the Maine coastline, and is situated on Orr's Island, about 12 miles outside of Bowdoin's main campus. For more information about the center, and the Schillers' donation to Bowdoin, check out the college's website here.

Granted some don't like Schiller on stage,
But This is a really unselfish donation they donated and its an area Likely that many don't think about when it comes to researching the Marine environment. I myself would like to understand more about the marine environment.

Seriously, this is great. Thanks Phil & Kim for contributing to a very important program!

Edit: Just noticed, "They have two sons: Erik and Mark—a member of the Bowdoin Class of 2017."

Is it just me or do they have the *exact* same face? She is like the female version of Phil haha

There's lots of research showing that married couples end up looking like each other.

This may be due to the fact that we experience the same ups and downs, laughs and frowns together over the years. We also tend to be attracted to people with similar features to ourselves.

Generally people are most attracted to others with similar features. Same eyes, lips or noses and so on.. if you look at a lot of couples you can start to notice similarities in looks. Humans are vain, even subconsciously.

On a side note, great that Phil is putting money to useful things, he is a lovely guy, what has that fool Cue even done other than buy more sports cars or karaoke machines. I can't wait till the day cue is fired.

That's great. It's nice to see them, as multi-millionaires, donating like this. It shows they aren't all about themselves. I think Apple execs tend to keep this private, but letting it be known makes them more like real people in my opinion. Some may see it as self-righteous or bragging, but I don't think so.

Many people seem to marry or fall in love with someone with the same facial features as their "familiar" to oneself. Their also most likely high school sweethearts so they've spent a LOt of time in their lives together and thus begin to look similar.

That’s very nice of them. It’s an area of research that probably can’t ever have too much funding.

Education is paramount today in society as it's always been troughout time. Since their kids attend this school the donation is promoted yet also still unselfish and a great contribution the world hopefully can benefit from. THIS is the responsibility of the wealthy.

Good move Phill! Teaching children how important the planet is is always a good thing to do... and ocean research too..

One of THE best things about Apples new spaceship are the endless solar panels on its roof! Frigging fantastic!!! :) :)

Good job Phil and Kim.

Joking aside, think about that number for a minute. 10 Million. That's a tremendous amount of money to donate to a research cause that most never have heard or were aware of. There are a lot of things the Schillers could have invested/spent that money on, and they chose to invest into something that likely could always use funding for the better of the marine environment.

Now that the college has his money, is someone going to tell Phil that Spongebob is a cartoon…
