It's a rich man's world at Apple... But glad to see even some of their obtuse wages going towards a good cause, I think Tim's giving away a lot of his personal wealth too. Makes you wonder why they even needed the wealth in the first place, just give it away via Apple.

I thought he was going to give it all away...

The money is score card

I'm not saying this isn't generous, or they don't really care about this donation/cause, but this isn't the purely altruistic gesture everyone here seems to think it is. There is no such thing as a completely selfless act.

Before you put Phil and his wife on some philanthropic moral pedestal, look at it this way: You may deduct a maximum of up to 50% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) (Line 36 on IRS Form 1040) for the tax year the donation was given.

Translated: Phil makes so much freakin' money it's cheaper for him to give away 10 million dollars in charitable donations than to pay the taxes on his full AGI. And a little positive press and having your legacy preserved in the form of a building named after you never hurt anyone either. ;)

No, it's not cheaper for him. A 10 million dollar donation means at best he saves the income tax on 10 million dollar income. He still ends up with about six or seven million dollars less in his pocket.

Courage! Innovation! :) Finally, for the first time I can applaud something Phil has said. :p And I applaud his lovely wife, as well. Climate change is projected to drastically change the coastlines and shore ecosystems over the next century and our kids won't necessarily be able to share the experiences with their kids that we were able to share with them. It's already happening and some beautiful places and heritages are disappearing before our eyes. Maybe these college students will come up with something to help wildlife adjust to and survive the changes ahead.

Joking aside, think about that number for a minute. 10 Million. That's a tremendous amount of money to donate to a research cause that most never have heard or were aware of. There are a lot of things the Schillers could have invested/spent that money on, and they chose to invest into something that likely could always use funding for the better of the marine environment.

Truth.

As a certified SCUBA diver, I can't thank Phil and his wife enough for donating such a huge chunk of cash to something that goes overlooked. The health of our oceans are paramount to our survival, and this money will do some good, enabling the school to reach more kids and help them generate and develop interest in marine sciences and conservation. Also, much respect to him for finding something so worthy for his charity instead of the lying SPLC or some other political hot button.

Generally people are most attracted to others with similar features. Same eyes, lips or noses and so on.. if you look at a lot of couples you can start to notice similarities in looks.

Hummm that's so general and not true for so many couples, like mixed raced ones to say the least.

Is it just me or do they have the *exact* same face? She is like the female version of Phil haha
There's some interesting research about spouses and their faces.
Turns out, couples end up looking more like each other over the years. Why? Well, they share a lot of the same diets, facial expressions, and more. Pretty cool.

Cheaper than paying taxes when you make the kind of money he makes...

Don't ya know, it has been suggested couples start to develop facial similarities after a while, even people and their pets, believe it or not :D

On topic, awesome gesture by the Schillers. Even though there are tons of worthwhile causes out there that could use sizeable private donations, oceanic research is definitely an excellent choice, and with rising ocean levels, this could pay big dividends for millions in the future.

It's heart-warming to see caring gestures like these by people in the public eye, kind of stimulates us to get off our collective behinds and contribute something ourselves, either in time or money.

Some people in this forum are never happy... :)
Rich and don't donate? They are selfish.
Rich and donate? Oh it's not altruistic. They save money through donation....

Nice job. I always appreciate it when the people with lots of $$$ share some of it to improve the future.
On the other hand, if you can afford to donate $5m, you have too much money.

That's true; Jim Pattison, a Chevy dealer, & owner of Guiness World Records & Ripleys, just donated $50 million for our new Children's Hospital, which will be opening soon; as a nursing intern who works 12-hour shifts (or more), 6 days a week & doesn't get paid, it must be nice to have money to give away...
