Phil Schiller: White iPhone Set for Spring Launch

Apple executive Phil Schiller yesterday confirmed in a Tweet that Apple still intends on delivering a white iPhone "this spring". While Schiller did not explicitly note that the device would be an iPhone 4, he is presumably referring to the much-delayed white iPhone 4 given that the fifth-generation iPhone is almost certainly not set to launch until the summer timeframe of June or July.The white iPhone will be available this spring (and it is a beauty!).Originally announced in June 2010 alongside the black iPhone 4, the white version has been delayed several times by Apple, reportedly due to issues with paint application that have caused issues with light leaking through and affecting the device's rear-facing camera.

Apple's last public comments on the delays came in October, when Apple pegged the launch for spring of this year. While several indications since that time, including claims from just last week that the device should ship in early April, have continued to point to a spring release, Schiller's comment marks the first specific word from Apple management about the white iPhone 4 in many months.

Is there much point in releasing a new colour a couple of months before the next model is expected?

Could this be a hint at no iPhone 5 in the regular summer timeframe?
 
I did not know he had a twitter acount. Maybe they will come simultaneously the new iPhone available in black and white and the white version for the old one. They did sell the 3GS and the iPHone 4 both at the same time so it could happen.
 
Does seem weird, you might as well just give up on launching a white iphone 4 now we are so close to 5. Apple will release an iphone and ios this summer tho, be complete lunacy not too.
 
My wife is interested in buying one. She needs a new phone, doesn't want to wait until June, and loves the look of the white iPhone 4. I doubt many people from Macrumors will be interested but they'll still sell.

They'll still be making and selling iPhone 4s through to summer next year as the "discount" phone when the iPhone 5 comes. So it makes perfect sense to me.

iPhone 5 will be released in white and black for sure. The fact that they are also going to release the white iPhone 4 just prior to it points that iPhone 5 will be of the same design, as in that case it would be an easy thing to simply use the same white colored parts in both phones.

So, if you have it why *wouldn't* you sell it? There is nothing to lose, just push a few more out. Sure, those who buy it will not turn around and buy iPhone 5 as soon as it comes out, but I doubt that Apple is worried about how many of these things they can sell in total, as they are about how fast and how soon can they sell them. It's not like they'll be charging more for iPhone 5 (I certainly hope not!)

If true, then it sounds like the iP5 is going to get pushed so they can sync the Verizon and ATT models.

Why would a middle aged man like Schiller have a cartoon as his twitter pic?

I call BS on the account being genuine.
 
Facts:
Mr. Schiller didn't say "iPhone 4," he said "iPhone."
Spring ends June 21, 2011.
The rumored dates for WWDC 2011 are June 5-9.
WWDC is where Apple have released iPhones four years running.

Now, Apple have also been known to bump the iPhone specs in the spring before the next version to keep sales up, but don't assume Mr. Schiller said things that he didn't.

That's what I was thinking. If the twitter account was genuine, then maybe he is referring to the iPhone 5, being launched perhaps in "late" spring.
I can't see them releasing a white iPhone now, going through all the hassle of production, just to release a new one a month later.

They can produce white. The white iPad 2. So there's no reason why they can't produce a white iPhone 4. Keeping this is mind, it will probably be a white iPhone 5 that Phil is speaking about.

The problem was with the iPhone's proximity sensors. The iPad doesn't have those. So that iPad having white doesn't mean anything for the iPhone.
 
Does the Macrumors community not understand that after the initial launch of a new iPhone they don't just stop selling? These things will sell like mad the next 2-3 months. So, if Apple released the white version, chances are it will sell. Not everyone buys a phone on release date. Most people buy a new phone when their contracts are up/they are eligible for an upgrade. Some people will buy the iPhone 4 in June, and not think anything of it. It's very simple really.

Yep. Not to mention the fact that the iPhone 4 will sell as the 'cheap' model until summer of 2012.

There's tons of time to sell white iPhone 4s still.

I haven't as well but it seems awfully odd; and the fact that apple employees at Cupertino who know a thing or two are supposed to keep their lips tight on everything until an official announcement.

There WAS an official announcement that the white iPhone would come – or was delayed until – this spring, so nothing new is really revealed with this tweet. It only repeats what Apple have already announced. But then, I'm still waiting for my officially announced 3GHz PowerMac G5. It was also due in summer - of 2004!
