To get the same effect, you could put an ikea candle in a Tupperware bowl. Lol.

But will it do different color moods? I have never used one of these and I am not sure I ever will, but you should know there is a huge lighting industry selling ambiance lighting solutions costing over a million dollars each to business customers.

For example there are lighting solutions for high end food stores which make their fresh produce always look its best as lighting conditions in the store change throughout the day. Ambient lighting is a huge contributor to your mood and health. So it is not as silly as you think to consider more options than Ikea.

Btw. monitor lights disturb your sleep. Better turn those notifications off during the night

if they bring the price down a third and make it useable without a hue bridge you need to get separately i might think about it.

The problem with this useless item is that it doesn't actually put out any useful level of light. It just looks nice.

Like a candle? That many people use in their homes for special lighting? And some people burn down their houses accidentally with?

I don't know if I would buy one of these in particular but I do wish all of their other bulbs would come down in price. I have all the lamps and the projector in my living room on X10 so I can turn them off and on from the couch. Waiting to find out what will work with my Apple devices. X10 is old so I'll probably have to change to another system. My new garage door is also operable from my iPhone :)

It says right in the article "...so it can serve multiple functions as an accent light."

:)

For 100 bucks it shouldn't be an accent light.

I know Hue is pricey and a lot at that, but this really is exaggerated even by Hue standards.

When I read the title I thought they brought out something that works away from the home and the bridge, something Bluetooth enabled you can carry around (as "go" implies) to hotels and such, when you want to travel with some Hue comfort and ambience.

Well, turns out it's just a little ambient light for way too much money and a ridiculous battery life for an LED product.

Guess the product could serve some purposes, MAYBE, but not $100 purposes.

All of the haters of this wireless solution have obviously never suffered the misery of having to run really long extension cords to enjoy mood lighting while camping.

I'm all in with Philips Hue (18 lightbulbs and lightstrips) and I do in fact see this as a solution for certain scenarios.

I don't currently have Hue lights outside because they're not weather proof so it would be nice to just pick this up and put it on the table while having dinner on the patio.

Some corners of my home don't have lights and I'm fine with it like that as I get sufficient lighting from the room. But sometimes, in some circumstances I could use a little more light in a space, putting this on a desk for temporary use can come in handy.

Another situation that I think of often is in my bathroom. Almost all the time, I'd like my bathroom light to be as white and bright as possible because I want to be able to see myself in the mirror. So I have standard LEDs with a motion sensor for when somebody walks in. But sometimes, when taking a relaxing bath, I miss not having Hue lights in there. This will solve that occasional need.

Isn't the light WiFi controlled? If the powers out your network goes down and you cannot control the light.

Wrong. Read the article. There's a button on the light itself to select scenes and to turn the light on and off. Besides that, it is of course integrated into Hue's ecosystem so it works like any other Hue light using the app (or hundreds of 3rd party apps) or the website via its Zigbee (not WiFi) protocol.
