Don't live in fear. If you want it, get it.
I've already wasted small bits of cash on apps and games that no longer work on my new iPhone, I'd rather wait for this market to mature and futureproofing to be considered before throwing that much money into "smart" tech. But if it was much cheaper - sure I'd jump in.

My only problem is they claim to last 5-10 years, but I worry that they wont be supported by software in that time. So because of that I'm really interested in buying a smart lock for my front door, smart lights, etc, but I just can't until I see what Apple and these companies do to futureproof this stuff.

Imagine getting a smart lock and not being able to unlock your door because an Apple firmware update broke the app.
yes I have thought of that. they will end up being somewhat short term but so are most electronic things these days.

I was a big fan of Hue. I bought 4 bulbs and a bridge a while back. Two in the bedroom and two in the living room. I actually have one in the bedroom that turns on at 6 am and that serves as my alarm today. However, I have been holding back on any new purchases given the (previous) lack of support for homekit and the fact that the home automation space seems to be a mess right now. Before putting any more money into anything I am going to wait to see if someone comes out as a leader in the space with a full range of solutions (lighting, security, temperature, locks, fire, water, kitchen, etc.)

There is a solution its Alarm.com

I think you missed part of my point. Caseta is just a light switch connected to an outlet adapter. this only solves one problem - lighting. But for every problem, I will need another bridge with another solution and another app. No thanks! I will wait until there are leaders in the home automation that can solve multiple or all home automation needs with one bridge and one app.

Yeah you need to check Alarm.com

And if your asking what is the hub? I use the 2GIG Go Control 3 Touchscreen Panel (http://2gig.com/products/control-panels-keypads/gc3-panel/) as hub for my security system and automation system. Anything that is Z-Wave you can add and program to work with the system. Alarm.com comes into play by providing the interactive software on the backend. For example I can log into my account and update security codes and user names. As well as set home automation "rules". Right now I have a rule when I unlock the front door (using my 6 pin code) it will automatically disable the alarm system weather it's in STAY or AWAY mode

yes, there's still bo universally accepted standard for home automation - sure, there's homekit, and this will probably last for a while. but it won't become the defacto standard, because it's an apple (read: proprietory and somewhat-niche) thing, like quicktime, thunderbolt, bonjour, airplay, airprint, ...

on the other hand - hue products have been on the market since late 2012, so they are already 3 1/2 years into it, and besides them being one of the worlds largest manufactures of lightbulbs, they've shown that they are ready to adapt to new technologies while maintaining compatibility with old ones (see the rather new, homekit-compatible hue bridge)

Heh, proved my point there. If I was to have bought a HUE last year then this year I wouldn't have a homekit compatible one.

What'd make me feel comfortable splashing that kind of money on lamps is if they released their own remote, or had simple control dials underneath just in case iOS13 broke device-compatibility. These lamps last a very long time (I've been solely using standard LED lamps for a couple of years now and none have broke on me. Before that I used to have a halogen blow every month in the same home).

If they can get these out the door for $25 or less then this is what will push me into upgrading the rest of my home to HUE lights.

I have a few HUE lights in my bedroom, but $60 is way too much for the color bulbs, and the inexpensive $15 "white" ones are always warm white. I like being able to have different color temperatures depending on mood.

PLEASE let them charge $25 or less for this. At the MOST, $30. This is good stuff; I'm happy with the Hue bulbs I have, but want more at a reasonable price.

How many Hue bulbs can one bridge connect? I'm thinking about getting a Hue bridge then over time replacing many of the bulbs in my home with them. Also do they have outdoor bulbs, yet?

It will work with up to 63 bulbs, but Hue recommends no more than 50 or it gets flaky. From here. I have not seen any outdoor bulbs anywhere. I guess you could use a regular Hue bulb in a housing/fixture that is enclosed.
