my wife is blind and the echo was great for her to get the time and such faster then pulling out her iphone. we don't use it as much once she got her watch though we used it for timers and such.
Coincidentally, about 30 seconds ago I got this weekly email from Amazon announcing a new Echo feature that will read you books from your Kindle library. It looks like it syncs your progress from a Kindle or the Kindle apps. Might be something your wife would find useful.

saw that she does not really listen to books much anymore more podcasts and music. she uses sonos more for such things. sonos has been about the best for her one simple app to access all her music subscriptions and now apple music.

i have a question about the lightstrip plus extension.
if i need 2 lightstrips, lets say 240cm and 260cm, can i buy 2x 2m lighstrips + 1x 1m extension kit, and split it to 60cm and 40cm?

I tried setting up HomeKit and inviting the wife. I sent an invite to her regular email and iCloud email but she didn't receive through either. Thoughts?

Great news, I also heard that it's going to start supporting Nest thermostats so I'm looking forward to that, however I'm using an IFTTT recipe for now. I ended up finding one in my area on Saturday, even though it was a long drive. It's every bit as awesome as everyone says, I have all of my Wemo plugs and switches setup, with two more on the way.

Sorry to the original poster for hijacking your thread, not sure if it's appropriate to start a new thread on Amazon Echo in this forum. :)

I know there has been some discussion on this topic, but since this portion of the forum has been newly established I thought it might be good to have a single location to find information on one of the more commons entrants into the home automation space.

Will update first post with more info.

I recently purchased the v2.0 with HomeKit comparability. Setup was pretty straight forward, but the use of apps and interface is throwing me for a bit of a loop.

I've setup some scenes through the native app that work, but I've also setup Rooms through 3rd party apps. However, Siri doesn't recognize those.

Another issue - I don't understand how to setup sharing of these settings with my wife. Do I have to use keychain accounts?

I bought into the Wink system because of cost. It sounds like Hue has much better features -- the integration with this sleep tracker I have sounds awesome -- but the Wink starter kit with two bulbs and a hub was $25. More bulbs are $15. It's not as fancy, but I control five light bulbs from my phone.

I'd love to get Hue products, but it would cost about as much for those five lights I have for one Hue bulb and setup hardware. Then the cool strip of LEDs is about $90. So maybe once cost can be brought down I'll be more into it.

I installed a key code door lock that can supposedly be used with Wink. My next thing is a smart thermostat for when I forget to turn the temp down or up when I leave.

At my local Apple store, Hue white bulbs are $15. A starter kit with two bulbs and the bridge is $80.

right now hue is affordable. I finally replaced all my wink bulls as they were always loosing the connection and ended to be reset once in awhile one would come on in the middle of the night.

I don't know, their starter kit with just 3 bulbs for $199 has always seemed really steep for me. My main rooms, living, dining and kitchen each have 5 bulbs, it would be way too expensive. It's far more practical for me to use smart switches instead, I just won't get all those coolio colors.

Well the $199 is for the color bulbs. You can get the white only bulbs for less and as part of a cheaper kit.

As an aside, I did find a blog reference, that states when you boot or reset a light it defaults to 2700k color temperature.

My wife and I were discussing this last night, in particular because we just learned that WEMO doesn't support 3 way light switches (like stairs with one switch on the top and the other on the bottom) so we need to find a different solution for this. The most practical would be a bulb, so we may go this route but I still can't justify changing out 5 bulbs that are on one switch, so I'll need to work this out somehow.

On a side note @Weaselboy my wife, who generally does NOT support this sort of tech, is now asking for a second Amazon Echo for the upstairs. That thing is the most awesome piece of tech since the iPhone IMO.

I believe that the Lutron Caseta support 3-way and work with HomeKit. You would place the real switch on the load wallplate and then link to the remote dimmer which is a battery operated thing but can be mounted in a wallplate. I would prefer to have a "real"s switch as the slave/dummy instead of battery one because it shows the led's with dim level but I am not sure if Caseta can do this. Check out this site and click 3-way on right for video http://www.casetawireless.com/pages/support.aspx

I wouldn't follow it literally hooking the wires together like they said until you determine a bit more about how the travellers work in your 3-way and know which end is the load end (top or bottom of stairs).

This seems to be an issue with Smart Bulbs because most homes use wall plates for our lighting. Phillips has the most ugly, non-standard looking switches to control their Hue bulbs and that is a big reason why I am not seriously looking at them. Not everyone in my family wants to pull out their iPhones to start turning on/off lights.

You also mention Amazon Echo. I wish it was available officially in Canada. Universal Devices just added support for their ISY994i and released a beta - many are saying great things about it and you can turn on/off lights via voice. If this was available in Canada I would definitely get one. http://forum.universal-devices.com/topic/17861-amazon-echo-connected-home-feature-beta/

You're right, the Lutron Caseta 3-way setup can only be done with one "real" switch and the other switch being replaced with the included remote. I had a couple of 3-way switches and couldn't find a way around this (to see the LEDs on both switch locations).

Philips did release a new, more traditional looking dimmer switch compared to the Hue Tap. Problem is, it still won't fit a standard wall plate. The overall footprint is the same size as a regular wall plate but the "buttons" on it are a removable remote and it's quite large compared to a normal switch. Because of this, you can't install it beside an existing one and cover it with a 2 or 3 gang wall plate. It has to be mounted somewhere on its own or beside another bank of switches. Worked for us because the room we use it only had lamps, but it won't work for everyone.

This is exactly what I did. For this particular situation I am leveraging a WEMO motion controller that I've had for a couple of years but haven't been using. So I setup the WEMO light switch at the bottom of the stairs, patching the red wire in with one of the blacks and it works as it should. I Just left the switch at the top of the stairs alone and setup the motion controller to trigger the lights to come on, then I have a trigger to automatically shut them off after 5 minutes, regardless of how they were turned on. It's a workaround but so far it's working really well for us.

Talk about HomeKit being a frustrated system.

I repeatedly tried to invite my wife's iCloud account - per Apple - but nothing came through.

I decided to install the Hue app, but upon pairing it told me somebody (me) had already paired HomeKit. It said that needed to be done before I could take advantage of Siri.

I then tried inviting my wife's gmail account and the invite showed up immediately. However, Siri won't work. Every time I give a command she says sorry she's unable to locate. Yet all lights and scenes show up.

This might help you.

For you guys using the Echo with your hue lights, WeMo switches, Nest thermostat, etc, what kind of range does the echo still work reliably? For instance, if I got an echo it would sit on the entertainment cabinet in the living room and I'd be sitting on the sofa about 10' away or in the kitchen 15-20' away. Would the mike still pic up my voice reliably from those distances?

I'm using this setup. I have the Echo on a table along the living room wall. If there is not a lot of background noise (like TV blaring) it can easily pick me up anywhere in my 20 x 25' living room using a normal speaking voice. It even picks me up well in the adjoining open dining room where my chair sits about 25' feet from the Echo, but I need to speak up slightly louder than a normal conversational voice level. It really falls off when I turn the corner into the open kitchen now about 30 feet from the Echo. If there is no ambient noise, I can speak fairly loudly and it often picks up the command, but not reliably. I think the issue with the kitchen is it is around the corner from the Echo. If your kitchen is open and in a direct line of sight (sound) with the Echo I think it will work better for you than mine.

That's awesome. I just realized the Echo connects over wifi, so I could place it in the "corner" by the sofa and side chair. This is right under the kitchen bar which would be more centrally located for the living room/kitchen/dining room. It's really just a large open room with two hallways going to the master and spare bedrooms, respectively. The entire apartment is maybe 1500 sq. ft.

That does sound like a good idea. Maybe even up higher on top of the bar would work better? It really is not that big and looks pretty decent I think. People seem get a kick out of seeing ours out in the living room and playing around with it. :)

There's an outlet on the wall behind the bar so I could plug it in there. That might work really well!

I have the Amazon Echo setup on my kitchen island and she works pretty well. Looking back at this thread I didn't really know much about this device, now I live by it. My entire first floor is automated with it using WEMO and Hue, one of the coolest inventions ever IMO, about to get a second one for upstairs. @Weaselboy look at what you started!

Hah! Glad you are enjoying it.

They just rolled out an update that allows Echo control of my Rachio wifi sprinkler timer, so that's my next task.

I have to admit though, my wife asked why I would want to control the sprinklers with the Echo and I did not have a good answer.:D

My wife stopped asking why after about a week lol, but like you mentioned, she does use it as well. Although there is a lot of tech fun to be had with this thing, we find ourselves using the shopping list feature daily.
