The box needs to be able to process the video signal. If you have a box that can only understand 1024P and you give it a 4K signal it will not be able to understand it at all. It is not some much about the resolution as about the signal format and how the bits are ordered.

Gotcha! This makes sense. Never really thought about how my Philips TV knows where to put what color haha

Hue is good stuff, but I’ll be buggered if I’m going to pay $350 + lights to add light biasing to my theater. I’ll pay the Apple tax because it’s recouped from business, but lighting? Nope. Maybe I’ll bite at $200.

Listen, I love the Hue ecosystem, but I just cannot justify the price of lighting up the back of my TV with Hue. Between the box and the light, I'll be out $600. I picked up a first gen Govee TV light a few years ago and it works great and costed less than $100. Is it as feature rich or accurate, probably not, but I'd say it's 85-90% there at 1/6th the price. And it doesn't require passthrough which is the whole reason the 8k model exists.
Govee has great colors and is very affordable. The bulbs are good. The app could be better and they really need to work on seamless support for animations and scenes across devices. Their outdoor lights shine great at first but water infiltration happens within weeks and the hardware fades and looks awful after one season. Had a total of 8 spotlights for the garden and every single one of them failed, and even the replacements. There might have been 1 that didn’t get infiltrated when I pulled them out after less than a year. I do not recommend any of their outdoor stuff.

Important to note that all Samsung 2022 and up TVs support Philips Hue sync without this box and with HDMI 2.1 support as it is built into the TV. You do have to buy the Hue Sync app from the Samsung store though once or as a monthly subscription. I rather do this than fork out $350 for this stupid overpriced box.

I tried it and was not good at all... Might have go better.

I have a Phillips Ambilight "The one" set and that has ambilight and a Hue link... unfortunately Phillips TVs are only a brand name now and made by TP vision and they seem to have parted way with signify ( Which I think is still Phillips owned - it's confusing )

lol @ people complaining about the price... if you're in the Phillips Hue ecosystem, you're already paying a premium for it...

Plus there's a ton of alternatives out there that are much much cheaper?

Alternative to Hue lighting are the "matter supported" GE Cync. This seems like a better path with Amazon, Apple, and Google supporting matter.

I am NOT interested in yet buying into another manufacturer ECO system. Thread / Matter seems to be the next solution and it's just beginning.

My days of purchasing HUE are over. I still love the app, features, and original bulbs. Philips is focused on high-end fixtures and no longer offering smart bulbs that look like, bulbs.

Sorry if I misunderstood but are you talking about Philips TVs? Samsung TVs are the only ones with the Hue Sync app.

Whew that price. Wonder how much I can sell the og box for? I actually like the sync box, but I don’t have my console connected to it because of limitations.
That is the problem with Philips Hue stuff, they have some good stuff and the hue system is good, but the prices are high.
i have the hub, some bulbs and dimmer switches and that is as far as I am going to take it, I did think about getting a light for the kitchen, but at over £150 just for a basic ceiling light, it put me off. If this was my house andnot rented then maybe

I've gotten into Hue lights through accumulated sale purchases, but the HDMI box I have not been able to get at a reasonable price. Their software is free, however, so I can use the functionality with my home theatre gaming PC. Having an 8-zone dynamically controlled bias light setup behind the TV is actually quite effective at increasing immersion. The dominant colour on whichever side of the TV is then projected on the wall. The peripheral match gives an illusion of a larger image. The first time I hit a jungle-on-fire scene in Tomb Raider, it was pretty awesome to have the flickering red. Extending this functionality to other devices on my HT would be great, but not at the asking price. Hopefully the older model drops in price as a result of the new product. I should be able to hang it off my receiver's alternate output and not give up 4k120.

Same here, after "glowing" reviews I got the Hue Sync App Monthly Subscription for 2.99€ on my Samsung S90C and the lag between screen and lights was way too big (not measured, but ~0.4/0.5 seconds). It's not so bad with all the demo videos on YouTube, but once you watch an actual show/movie, it is REALLY bad and distracting unfortunately.

The last gen was an awful product. Didn’t play well with Apple TV. Inconsistent performance. Hard pass on this.
Really - what was the issue? I have the last gen product since it came out and only us an ATV and have no issues that I have noticed? Just curious.

Would upgrade to this version, but really don’t know what it offers, as not a gamer nor have a 8k tv yet. Think ATV needs another upgrade to take full advantage of the new product.

My biggest issues was TV flickering or the screen going black and then coming back on. It didn’t work consistently with Apple TV which was the deal breaker for me.

So can I attach my Apple TV to this and then attach this to my display and so it’ll work with Apple TV content?

Glad I have Philips Ambilight TV so I don't need pay anything extra for it. I read online that first box have many issues and doesn't work if attach external devices like Apple TV, Ruku, gaming console etc.

Interesting. Luckily I have not had those issues. Maybe the new one fixed it though, if that was a consistent problem for others.

I have that bit Apple TV and game consoles. I am hoping that this new Sync Box is more stable because can handle higher bandwidth video signals.

I really don’t get why people want to have TV backlighting systems like this (yet alone entire room lighting systems that react to the TV, as pictured), particularly with nicer TVs or projection setups they’ve paid good money for because it ruins the visual experience by throwing off color perception. It also draws your attention to things — the lighting itself, plus objects in the room — other than your screen. Screen backlighting (called bias lighting) is a thing, but it’s nothing like this. Give me a proper, theater-style darkened room with emphasis on the screen, and just the screen!

But I suppose this appeals to people for the same reason RGB gear does to gamers. To each his own, of course, but it’s not for me.

I think it looks awesome and then when I look at other TV’s that don’t have it, then look like they are missing something. Definitely does not draw your attention to it, as it blends with the scenes displaying on your tv and in my opinion makes the TV even larger. Every person that sees it on my TV wants one and thinks it is really cool.

One of the two reasons why my PS5 doesn't go through my current Sync Box. Even watching Netflix through it, it is annoying once a while, the connection drops then reconnects after 5 seconds.

Praying this new version fixes this issue.
Happy to report that I've been using it for 4 days straight now and have not experience the connection loss issue so it certainly seems to be solved :)

Any overheating issues with the new box?
The older Hue Sync would over heat, causing flickering from time to time for users (reported here on reddit)
