By that logic: What's wrong with the tube TVs we had for 60 years or so?

I for one applaud innovative new products that move us forward, rather than leaving us in a static technological world. And this particular product looks to me to be extremely simple and well-designed, at least from a first look at the details.

Home lighting has remained pretty basic--it needed a shot in the arm.

Oops... iPhone's in the car.

And... home lighting needs a shot in the arm? So do Oreo's... they've looked the same for so long.

They must have gotten the inspiration from NEST which incidentally was started by the father of the iPod @ Apple.

Spending 200 bucks on a NEST system is just fine when you take into account the real need to control your house temp remotely not to mention the cost savings.

But color lights? I guess its a novelty item that will appeal to many.

Really? I stated that you can purchase top rated Phillips LED bulbs at THD for far less. And, per the poster just after mine, it's easier to simply get up and turn your lighting on and off. As that poster also said, sometimes we make stuff just for the sake of making it.

Apple's target market, indeed. When do the lines form?

I was being a little sarcastic--thought it was obvious, but oh well, here's the rolleyes:

I'm aware cheaper bulbs are available for less $, but the difference is not that substantial for decent lights. I'm also aware that most adults are capable of getting up to switch lights on and off. I presume you threw out your TV's remote also.

My point is that your post is typical of the obnoxious snark around here (though certainly not the worst example): I really don't care if you don't want this product--telling me you can buy cheap light bulbs and are capable of getting off your couch doesn't impress me, and is irrelevant to a discussion about a product that offers a great deal to those who want it and can afford it.

I might consider it if you could just buy a wireless adapter that attaches to a normal bulb. But I'm not going to pay $59 every time a light burns out...

It's not a novelty. :)

It's the same reason people paint their rooms different colors. It's the same reason we have dimmers for lights. It's the same reason people throw fabric over lights to create a softer, more romantic light. Lighting just isn't used for helping you see.

That old iPhone 3G I didn't know what to do with? My new light switch.

I'm mounting it to the wall where all my main light switches are.

Pardon quoting myself but my iPad 3 will be the perfect master light switch, the iPhone 3G in the bedroom and the iPhone 4 in the living room. The iPad will be mounted to the wall at my door, the others next to the bed and couch.

By the way, LIFX's backers are withdrawing but others are replacing the newly available slots. The issue with LIFX is that it will only be ready in March 2013. Phillips is available now. With Phillips being sold inside the Apple Store, LIFX might not even take off. We need these things to be future proof and I'm pretty sure that Phillips will be around in 20 years. LIFX? I was hoping they would but not so sure now.

I think I'll be carrying $199 next time I take a stroll past the Apple Store.

I'm sure people will be rushing out to buy bulbs for $60 each. As long as it adds to Apple's bottom line, they should sell well.

Oreos are not a consumer tech product, so the analogy doesn't seem to fit very well to me. Technology advances much faster than supermarket cuisine.

As for you leaving your iPhone in the car, I think I've done that once since having one, and even if I do it again, I have my iPad and my wife's iPhone to fall back on. :)

I'm also pretty sure you can still turn these things on and off the usual way, just without all the color control, etc.

Pretty awesome...I love having get togethers at my house and at this point I change a lot of my bulbs out with colored "party bulbs" to set a nice atmosphere. I will definitely buy these, It's not like you have to replace every bulb in your house, just a handful would work wonders.

Pair this up with the nest thermostat and we are getting very close to the wifi controllable home of the future ;)

Aren't there doorlocks out now unlockable via your iphone?

They virtually never burn out. I can't remember how long LEDs last but it's a looooooong time.

Thank goodness, some intelligence!! Home lighting is critical to home design, at any budget level.

I would buy it if it wasn't for one thing. 50W equivalent (600 lumen). Make it 100W equivalent and I will buy a package now.

Didn't I hear you say the same thing to the Wright brothers?

"Wake me up when you can fly further than a hundred feet and carry more than one passenger"

Sometimes the responses to niche product releases on here are hilarious.

LED bulbs with 100W equivalent exist already.

Why do LED lights have to look so ugly and why do designers actually design them? It is the lamp demmit, not the armature where you put the lamp in. Was the incandescent bulb ever designed? No, it was just function.

Actually, with LED lighting, color, or color matching is the toughest thing I've found. My family likes the look of Halogens. The color temp of LEDs range from really Warm 2500k to really Cool 5000k. As I've converted my home to LEDs the color temp is critical to note if you want the family happy.

So, just being able to fine tune "white" would be really helpful. Plus, there really are studys showing how color lighting can affect mood. Philips has higher end versions of these systems deployed in specific Hospital departments where patients are typically stressed like Imaging areas, Peds ICU's and Emergency rooms. These systems do really help patients feel better, less stressed.

All in all this could be pretty good stuff and I will pop for the starter kit and attempt to tackle the only room left in my home with Halogens, the family room!

Come on think how cool it will be to walk into the romm, and just ask Siri to turn on the lights. Or in your house and ask siri to turn on lights in specific rooms, set the tempature to 74.

This does have potential and has to start somewhere.

For those of you looking at the Nest, I recommend checking this out too.

I installed it a few weeks ago and I have been very happy with it so far. I would much rather take 10 miutes and program the unit myself instead of having to adjust it up and down for weeks in order for it to learn what I want it to do. Not to mention its $100 cheaper.

It's been real slick being able to log into the app on my iPhone and turn the heat down after we have left home on Friday, and then log back in again on Sunday on our way home and have it back up to temp by the time we get there. My wife was always complaining before about coming back to a 50° house after a weekend in the winter, or a 80° house in the summer, now it is the normal temp by the time we get home.

It was a bit of a PITA to get it connected to my WiFi. I think the issue was it tries to set itself to the 192.168.1.100 IP address when it first joins the network, and I already had another device taking up that address using DHCP. Once I changed my router to start assigning IPs at 192.168.1.101 it hooked up right away and has worked since.

sounded expensive at first but when it all adds up not too bad i guess. wont see the savings in the short term tho.
