A question for those who have a good understanding of iOS security. I got an email appearing to be from Amazon offering me a voucher, I realised straight away that it was just spam, coming from an address at "osdatehub.com".

Then I did something stupid! At the top of the email was a message in a yellow box asking if this is spam and to click if it was - absentmindedly I clicked it and it opened safari and took me to a page on list.osdatehub.com/lists followed by a lot of gibberish. On the page it said I could unsubscribe from the list, it had my email address pre-filled in and a box for unsubscribe reason. Obviously I realised I had been tricked into clicking the link and didn't go any further.

My question is do I need to be concerned about this? Are they just trying to get me to confirm by email address? Or can simply opening a weblink on an iPad cause any trouble or allow them to access any of my information?

Yes I feel like an idiot for even falling for it! Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Most likely you will just get more from them because you have verified that your address is valid. I also get a lot of similar "Thank You" emails - Amazon, Walmart, etc - and because they use varying false email addresses and subject lines I haven't found a good way of blocking them.

Thanks - I'm used to it and I've honestly never clicked it before!

I realised it was fake from the get go by the address (and that Amazon don't normally email me offering free vouchers!). But I vaguely recall at least in OSX that there is a yellow colored bar to mark things as spam and that was how they got me with this (and lack of coffee).

I didn't give them any more info but yes it will be annoying if I now get inundated with their spam.

  1. Do not be too concerned.
  2. They have now confirmed your email. By clicking the link, the server has logged this as an active email.
  3. Opening a weblink in of itself is not dangerous. Falling for the popups that follow is dangerous.

I block entire primary domains.... for example anything from .ru or .top never makes it to my mailbox.

That's reassuring - I have always trusted Apple on security so couldn't imagine that Mail on iOS would have a vulnerability so glaring, just it's a bit worrying when you actually click on the button and then seconds later realise you've made a big mistake! I'll have to wait and see if I get flooded with more spam now :(

I’m getting this on gmail iOS 11 and did the same dumb thing unsubscribe link and some are amazon and some are not and they are not being sent to spam automatically which sucks
