So plugged in my mini13 last night to charge overnight and it turned itself off at some point. Ended up late for work as alarms obviously didnt go off. I assumed I didnt plug it in properly and the battery died but that was not the case. I was unable to get it started for ages, but eventually found the correct sequence of buttons online. When it started it had 70% charge (up from about 50% when I plugged it in). So it shut itself down and also stopped receiving charge overnight. Anyone have any ideas as to what could have caused this? Is it common? Does it happen in other iphones? I rely on the phone for alarms, but also at work so if it turns off in my pocket Id be screwed. It seems to be working fine again now, but I dont trust that it wont happen again.

Have you ever woken up and your car won't start? If not, it will happen. Would you still trust your car?

Check the charging port for lint. It is possible that the charge cable was not seated properly due to lint. Voice of experience regarding that. Other than that you should not be too concerned unless it happens again. All electronic devices, especially those with human written code, may encounter quirks as it is impossible to test all possible logic possibilities. Something may have just hiccuped.

I had something similar - although phone was not on charge. It just stopped being responsive at all. I also had to follow the button sequence to reset and restart and it has been fine since. Only thing I did was to update to the latest iOS version a few days before......

Its not that it didnt charge, its that it required a reset to get it to turn back on. Plus - even if the phone is off it should receive a charge, no? The port is fine. The phone had 70% charge in it. If it happened to my car Id take it to my mechanic and it would likely throw a fault somewhere. The issue with this is if I get into an apple store it will be an intermittent thing that they wont detect most likely. Ive pulled out an old alarm clock, but hopefully it wont happen again.

A discharged auto battery will not throw a fault. It was a cold morning, about 20F, started my truck, drove 1/2 mile, stopped, got out to go into the store. Came back out and the truck was dead, as in the battery had zero volts.
but hopefully it wont happen again
Yes. I have had strange lockups on my phone and my wife's phone. They were not charging, just sitting out waiting to be used. Completely unresponsive. Getting the phone operational required a forced restart. I have had the same thing on my iPad. Windows 11 has also done some strange stuff requiring a complete power cycle. Even my MBA2 had a lockup the other day. App or OS related? Who knows.

The incidents are not repeatable thus no way to get a solution. There is no error log that us mere mortals can access. Electronic devices will sometimes get into a bogus state for which there is no recovery other than restart. My brother flys commercially. He has had computers in the plane go wonkers. Required the pulling of the breaker and restarting the computer, as directed by the flight manual for the plane. Reported to maintenance, no problems found, unit replaced as a precaution. Fortunately there are significant backups on a plane and the loss of one computer is not fatal.

In other words, stuff happens.

I concur with checking the lightning port for lint/dust collecting inside. This happened on my iPhone before, things like slow charging or not charging at all, which I found to be really weird. One time the phone is overheating while not charging, and it shut itself down. Then apparently that was due to lint collecting inside the lightning port.

Might be a software malfunction. These things happen on complex electronics. I wouldn’t worry about it unless it happened again. It has never happened to me before however if it did I would wait to see if the same problem became a recurring one before taking action.

So just an update on this. It did happen again. The phone also started popping up messages about being disconnected from mobile data even though it had full signal. Had to turn it off and on several times a day. Started having random screen freezes too. Was still under warranty and has been replaced now.
