phone will not ring or give sound alerts

hoping someone can suggest a fix; IPhone 4s iOS 5.0.1. Verizon
In sound settings and music I have sound but the phone will not ring for incoming calls and text messages. VIbrate in silent mode will sometimes work but not always. I have tried powering off then on,reset of all settings,deleting the last few apps I had updated. Nothing works. Suggestions? The closest genius bar is 100 miles away. Hardware or software problem, Verizon support or Apple?

Backup all your pics, music, SMS etc and put it into DFU mode and do a restore via iTunes.

Play about with it too see if your tones work properly then restore from backup and see if the problem comes back
