With Apples photo app in 10.10.3 is there a way of stopping it from coming on automatically every time I plug my iPhone or iPad into my MBP

Open Image Capture with your iPhone connected. Click the disclosure triangle in the lower left corner to reveal the "No application" option.

You can use Image Capture also to import to a folder or another application.
