Exactly the reason I don't use iPhoto or Aperture

The fact that Apple decided to build an extra barrier between me and my files is one of the reasons I hate iPhoto and Aperture.

The other reservation I have is that we already have camera makers screwing us with too many proprietary RAW formats without a promise to support them going forward.

Combine that with Apple's desire to make files only easily accessible through their programs and my concerns about accessing my photos ten years from now grow and grow.

I use Lightroom instead, which let me decide where I put my images, which I can then easily access with other programs as well, depending on what I want to do.

I am currently running the most recent version of iPhoto and I can still access my photos as I always have. It is a standard directory if running from the command line and I can select "Show package contents" from within Finder.

Is this different in Lion?

iPhoto's library 'Broke' Server's PHD's

I think iPhoto's packaged library is a good idea, I lost count how many times I used to break it when if first came out.

The problem is, the package has since shown to be incompatible with the Portable Home Directory (PHD) and Home Sync feature of both the Leopard Server systems. If you open iPhoto and change one thing Leopard seems to think it needs to re-sync the whole library and it usually kills the package file in the process.

This has been a well documented issue which Apple still haven't fixed. I hope Lion Server addresses the home sync nightmare and terrible inefficiency compared to the windows model (yes, I cringed saying it ).

Otherwise...PhotoBooth will have to be excluded from synced items.

All of my old photos were deleted! Photos that were not in my photo booth reel but that were in my Photo Booth picture folder are missing. I'm guessing this happened when the new photo booth asked to organize my photos...

Time Machine...

Is there any way to retrieve the files lost in the OS update other than using Time Machine? I back up my files manually, so I don't use it, but I lost a few months worth of photos.

Edit: I specifically mean the photos that were in the Photo Booth folder, but not in the actual program. Sorry for being vague there.

Edit #2: Scratch that - figured it out. Right click on the Photo Booth Library file, show package contents, and they should be in there in the folder "Pictures." Got quite a bad scare there, hah. It was mostly startling because they left the original Photo Booth folder intact, but with nothing inside of it. Glad nothing was lost - and to anyone else that had this scare, hope this helps!

Does it work?

I was just wondering, has anyone tried to see if PHD's and Home Sync in Lion breaks the iPhoto and now PhotoBooth library packages as SL Server did?

If it's fixed then I will have to camp out in my server cupboard in order to effect an upgrade to Lion Server...

Photos missing from Photo Booth folder to library conversion.

Okay, riddle me this -- I just did the conversion from folder to library. In the app it's only showing the PhotoBooth pictures taken up to a certain date, even though the newer files are in the same folder (revealed when I show package contents).

The ones that are showing up have the old school naming convention like Photo 514.jpg and the ones that are NOT showing up are all named a la "Photo on 2009-09-09 at 18.28". Renaming doesn't make them show up, and of course PhotoBooth has no import function.

Looks like the Folder -> Library transition is not seamless. Any ideas on how to fix this and get them to show up in-app?

EDITED TO ADD: Running this script fixed everything, though it's not for newbie users. http://donatstudios.com/Lion-Photobooth-Repair
