My husband wants to edit some images on our MacBook. He only needs to do some basic stuff.

Preview has some rudimentary editing functions. The Photos app has some more advanced functions. With extensions support, you can get some add-ons for Photos that can enhance those capabilities.

A little more advanced option would be Affinity Photo ($50 in the App Store). It's similar to adobe photoshop in its capabilities but is much cheaper. However, I would check out the photos app first before investing in a more high end software.

I forgot.. GIMP is free and is fairly highly featured.

If all you need to do is basic stuff, use Photos.
It actually works very well.
