Just bought a MacBook Air day before yesterday, and would like to get down to business loading my pictures on it. What I have spent a good part of today unsuccessfully looking for is an app/program/? that will allow me to annotate with (not actually on) each photo an explanation of who the subjects are, when the photo was or may have been taken, and where.. I have had no luck. Perhaps I have had no luck because I don't know what to call such a thing. "Edit" gets involved in colors and brightness. "Annotate" wants to write directly onto the photo image. What do I call just something that allows me to make and save notes along with the photo? (Oh, I have not actually opened Photos inside the Mac yet; just on my iPhone)

The word you're looking for is "metadata". This includes caption, keywords, date fields, etc. OS X Photos lets you enter and edit it. Aperture is (or sadly, was) better at it.

Thank you MC! Are there instructions for doing this anywhere? I haven't gotten into Photos on the MacBook Air yet. Waiting for a gentleman who said he would help me learn to use the Mac.

For instructions you can google "os x photos tutorial", and decide what's best for you. There's also Photo's own Help menu, of course.

In Photos, when you select a photo, press Command-I (or Window > Info). You'll find fields for Title, Description, Keywords, Location, etc. You can then use these fields to search and find photos. You'll find some fields already filled in, like date and location.

Through Albums > Faces view, you'll be able to mark subjects and Photos is smart enough to find other photos with the same person in it and auto-tag them as well, saving a lot of time.
