Even if it does have the larger battery I assume it'll only be there to compensate for the retina display and/or the new A6 SoC. I doubt Apple will put it in to increase the already good battery life by an hour or two.

I agree. When we look at the transition to the iPad 2, Apple had the chance to increase the battery life by maintaining the same thickness. It seems clear that they have a 10 hour goal and they will make it as thick as it has to be to keep that number.

iPad 3 no chance more like an iPad 2s ipad spec better camera retina screen mic and siri. Apple will go the same way they have with the iphone 4s the benefit of the a5 chip is the iphone 4s is pretty pointless the iphone 4 wasnt slow the only new feature the 4s got was siri will be pretty much the same for ipad 2s.

Apple's design is so good they don't have to change it so quickly a spec bump and retina display is enough imo.

By keeping the same design for 2 generations people can keep using their add ons and covers. Though it would be cool if they put what generation you have on the back of the iPad though. Behind the iPad 2 you just see 'iPad'

LTE? Better have hotspot...

If it has LTE, then it had better also be able to be a hotspot. IMHO, I have no use at all for LTE if I can't share it with my other WiFi capable portable devices.

Through that would be nice but some carriers probably will block this. Also would be nice if they only release one version with WiFi and LTE combined.

Other rumors have claimed that the device will run utilize a quad-core processor on Apple's next-generation "A6" system-on-a-chip and that support for LTE cellular connectivity will be included on some models.

I think I'm going to stick to my 1st gen iPad for 1 more year.

Mines currently on ebay with 20 bids :p Just gotta figure out what I'm play on until the 3 is out!

Surprised no one mentioned this yet, but is it just me or does the iPad shell on the right look shinier? aka LiquidMetal perhaps?

I dont think the two photos were taken side by side, the lighting is completely different. Probably just giving an illusion of it being different because of the lighting.

liquid metal?

is it just me or does the iPad 3 back look liquid metal (material that apple acquired)? It looks noticeably more reflective and slightly darker, the exact characteristics of liquid metal.

haha never mind looks like that was answered

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

So it's an iPad 2S then? Is it really that hard to change the damn outer shell to at least make look different? Is Jony Ive out of ideas?

I can't stand that ugly black patch on the 3G version..

One thing I wish Apple would stop doing is adding the number after the device. Just call it iPhone or iPad, like the rest of the Apple lineup.

A "Retina" display is kinda at the top of my list for upgrades I would like to see. It is easy to get spoiled by the iPhone screen.

Other things that would be nice to have...

128GB option
1Ghz+ CPU
1GB of RAM
Faster charging (iPad MagSafe)

Sources at the verge say the CPU will be a dual core with a much beefier GPU.

http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/8/2785486/ipad-3-back-photo-appears-a6-retina-display

As for GPU, they could go SGX 543MP4 (same as PS Vita). There's no reason to go 544 or 554 because those mostly add compatibility for desktop graphics APIs (directx) without any theoretical performance boosts. It's pretty obvious they would want to update the GPU given that they are quadrupling the pixels and they likely want it to run the most demanding iPad 2 games when they get updated for the Retina iPad screen (think infinity blade 2). The only other possibility is the 600 rogue series, but I don't think Apple could have that silicon ready yet. The first cores based on it aren't supposed to appear until 2013. However, if they could somehow magically get that out, it would CRUSH the 543MP2 and anything else out there. That GPU is an absolute beast.

How long does proofreading take again?

Only if they don't charge 130+ more for it AND doesn't force me to sign a contract with any f*%#@&$ carrier. You may want to pay out the nose for LTE but I don't and do just fine on my home/work/where-ever-else WiFi thank you very much. If I really wanted LTE that bad I'd get a little MiFi or equipment little hotspot box.

People get so jonesed about LTE and cell based Internet they seem to forget there's a decent chunk of people who still don't give a f&@$.

Also note, that would be bad for a deployment in schools if it came with the added costs.

I've had an iPad 1 since they first came out. And I will order the next gen as soon as it's available. Fine. Whatever. Take my money, but I'm not really that excited.

Now, offer an iPod touch with 128GB and then I'll be excited! They could have done this when the iPhone 4S was released. So what if it costs an extra $200? What's the deal? At least offer it. We've had 64GB iPods for years. Bump please!
