Why is everyone surprised by the clean room? What did you expect?

I would EXPECT happy AMERICAN workers - with jobs, paychecks, you know, stuff that will never happen again.

re pic of clean room peeps

ahh - i relate to these people in bunny suits - glad i dont have to work on a test floor no mo - though miss going thru the vacuum tunnel and doing the twirly gig dance

4" display won't implicate any major software change

Just think about the size that the iPhone apps have on the iPad emulator. I think that, if there is any change on the screen size, it will be to that very dimension.
Even though, I think the 3,5" makes sense for a phone. I haven't ever tried a 4" display, but I'm wondering if I can reach every corner of it without using both hands, in other words, only using my thumb (that's the way I use my iPhone, and it is indeed the fastest way to use it.

Also kind of looks like the Galaxy S2 front. I don't think we have any guarantee these are actual apple parts here. Image

There may be more curvature on the sides where the buttons resides, but it's hard to tell from the picture.

If the iPhone 5 does have that elongated home button you can bet that Samsung will be on their ass demanding an injunction.

Well you are delusional. Unless you and everyone else wants to pay more than twice as much for your apple toys, not gonna happen.

Clean rooms have nothing to do with American vs. over seas.

I'd rather have a cheaper iPhone, call me selfish but Apple products aren't always cheap, and American made Apple products would be far too expensive.

Never say never. Perhaps in 50 years when the standard of living in china and Korea exceeds the West, our grandkids will have jobs making thier playthings.

Damn, I hate it when people complain about Apple's products being made in China... Ironically, some of these people are the same people who are complaining about "socialism" and government over-regulating various industries....
This is just capitalism at its best, and this is what we sign up for when we decide to live in a capitalistic country.

On a more relative note... those buttons do look like stickers rather than an "elongated home button." Though, I'm really hoping for an elongated/gesture based home button. Can you imagine swiping left and right on the home button to switch between apps? That'd be too legit! :)

When I saw this photo yesterday with the bit about the elongated home button I laughed. I'm not sure how you would see an elongated home button in this image. There are clearly stickers or something of the sort there. Sounds like people trying to make the image fit their expectations instead of the other way around.

Regardless of which phone it is, that is obviously the inside of the screen, so its impossible to say the size or shape of the home button. Honestly though... When has Apple ever put something that isn't round as an imput button on the front of their devices? I think the elongated home button is hidious and rather pointless. They don't squidge, they make things smaller. (iPod mini to iPod Nano click wheel, for example) or non existant, like the iPhone, with no physical buttons/keyboards on the front of the device, other than the home button.

We won't be getting a mac rumors members mockup as the final iPhone 5 design people. Stop living in a dreamland.

Not quite, those are glass front panels. All iPhone models have had a hole in the glass, with a plastic plug acting as the button. Have a look at the iPhone 3G glass:

The little curved ribbon cable for the proximity sensor looks logical in the rumoured photo, but wait- isn't the iPhone 4 screen bonded to the glass? I can't imagine Apple departing from that.

While I am inclined to think that chrmjenkins is correct, the scales don't look quite right

elongated home button designed for swiping seems redundant as the whole screen can do the exact same thing.

Yeah, but instead of having something like 2 finger swipe on a <4" screen to switch between apps, an elongated gesture home button would be a genius way of going about it. I'm really envious of the gestures that the iPad got, but then again, I definitely don't want to look like a fool trying to fit four or even three fingers on a <4" screen to do some sort of gesture..

I believe it is for a different 'type' of swiping gesture. The screen is too small for the 3 or 4 finger swipes that you have in the iPad (on iOS 5). Making the area around the button 'swipeable' allows you to add a separate swipe gesture to swipe from one app to another, besides the swiping gesture on the screen, within an app itself.

I actually am not convinced that the button will be elliptical. I think it will remain round because that is 'elegant'. However, the screen glass on both sides of the round home button could capture swipe gestures over the button itself. This is not only more elegant, it is also cheaper. Because much of the glass itself comes with capacitive touch, so adding an extra few square mm of touch on that same glass is not a big deal. However, making the button itself also 'touch' involves unnecessary costs.

The autocad drawings used for all those China cases, I suspect that Apple requires clear space on both sides of the button, which is what may have been interpreted as a larger button.

may be the elongated home button is actually two buttons.. one home and other dedicated for something like camera...
