Hopelessness
Rural Oregon

Some years we have so many monarchs fluttering about that you can’t go outside without seeing a dozen. I remember one year in particular they were all over the place. I think they are pretty good at settling where the land supports them, and some of that is simply related to drought and when folks burn their pastures. Milkweed is an early succession plant, so they will really spring up a year after a good prescribed burn. If Kansans like anything, it’s a good hardy prescribed burn. One thing they definitely don’t like is Oz jokes. ;)

My wife raises Monarchs to try and increase their population. She raised and released about 20 this year.

Several had trouble flying and had to be euthanize them. We aren't sure if they had parasites or were deformed by the spraying that people do to keep spiders and other insects away from their houses/yards.

It is fun to collect them off the milkweed, feed the caterpillars, watch them ascend to the top of their cloth cage, form chrysalises, emerge and hang upside down to dry their wings and have us release them.

A surviving female monarch can lay between 400-700 eggs during their lifetime. so we are hoping that my wife's efforts can help increase the monarch population in the future.
Never tried raising them but planted milkeeds couple years back this year is best year for their growth for us but no catiplllars like I saw on milkweeds in prairie yet but we have them flying around on the flowers in our yard.

do you have any milkweed planted? you are on the migration path. we don’t usually get monarchs here till august when they start moving south.

We started seeing the fliers last month but more showing now so early migration? I have milkweeds in yard that are doing best this year but no catipillars I can see on them although something is eating them.

Hey rjjacobson and HawkTheHusky1902, it is easiest to use "multi quote" when responding to multiple posts in a row (Multi-Quote - to comment on several photos, click the "+ (Multi-Quote) button. This puts all your comments in one post. Multi-Quoting is required on all of the MacRumors forums.

This is not intended as a rude or unpleasant comment just a fyi so everybody please do not kill the messenger 🥸

I have had a hard time figuring out multi quote is so honestly never used/fully understood this. Sorry. I have in past clicked it but never saw any result. just clicked your message in Multiquote and the 1st message in this thread and did not see both messages when I replied I really have to see in action instructions do not make sense to me
You find all the posts that you want to reply to and hit the "Quote" button on each of them.
You can do that to multiple posts and when you have "selected" to quote it the + sign turns into a - .

Then when you go to the "write your reply" box you select "Insert quotes" and all quotes will be inserted in the reply and you can add your comments to them.

So this way you can reply to multiple people in one post. I hope this explanation makes more sense.
