If you flip the image horizontally, dodge the sun flare and add some yellow and contrast and then bump the temp and exposure on the overall even a bit more, you get something like this:

Quite pleasing. The flip is the big thing. :)

Thanks Mothers Day. I was actually wondering what it would look like with bigger flair from sun, but no idea how to do this! but I do like the look with it flipped and colour boosted. Thanks!

You're welcome. You may also be interested in my article on the same topic, if you haven't seen it already.

Terrific old car you found there, and the low vantage point makes it all the more interesting.

I did see it, and I tried to apply as much of what you said to the image I'm sharing today. This was taken almost a year ago. I started this year in Seattle, and this was snapped shortly after take off on the return home to Las Vegas.

^^^ Yes, that's a dunnock (AKA hedge sparrow). Sexes alike... unless you're a dunnock, of course... Nice shot. I don't think I see many pix of dunnocks; they're so unobtrusive and, of course, not very colourful...

I love the blue light snatches that you have captured here, did you open the door to that angle at the top of the stairs deliberately to get that reflection? It looks great with the bits on the bannisters as well. Now I can see what Phras was suggesting when she mentioned the blue light to you earlier on with regard to the other side of the room. :)

I didn't move anything. The blue light is from outside; when I toned down the warm colour cast of the interior lighting, it naturally pushed the window light towards the blue end of the spectrum.

I've really been enjoying your Blackwell shots Doylem...especially this one. The lady looks so at home in a great spot for a read. But I have to ask...is the place always so clean? I'm feeling like such a slob in comparison.

Blackwell is open to the public, so people can wander at will. The lady takes the money at reception, but I persuaded her to sit here... and I'd like to do more people shots there. Yet it's clean... something of a novelty for me, too, because I live like a woodland animal... :p

The water seemed to pick up colour from the rocks and stream-bed...

So since getting my Nikon F65 the other week I've been experimenting with film photography a lot more. I've been on a hiatus with film for the past year with University and stuff. Anyways, this is one of my favourites so far...

Weeping Willow by Ryan J. Nicholson, on Flickr

Shot using good ol' Ilford HP5 Plus B&W film and developed on pearl paper by Ilford Labs and then scanned via my Kodak scanner.

The lighting, subject, and composition of this this photo remind me so much of Vermeer. Congratulations, Doylem!

Thank you... That's exactly what I was thinking...

A couple of nights ago I stayed in this youth hostel at the Coniston Coppermines. Great location... but it illustrates why I don't really like unclouded skies for photography. The scene is 'over-lit'. Ah well, I had a good day's walking... :)

Virtual Painting Caricature

Always lot's of really great and beautiful landscapes/sunsets, plants/flowers and birds/bugs on here... forgive me for trying to mix things up a bit.

When it comes to film photography, I'm a bit of a purist; straight out of the camera is how I like to present it. But with digital, that's where I feel Photoshopping/Image Manipulation is just as much a part of the process of digital photography as taking the picture itself. With that being said, I'm working on a new [to me] series of what I call "Virtual Painting Caricatures". The photos are originally taken by me with a model and then heavily manipulated (obviously) in Photoshop.

I would love to challenge some of you to get out of your comfort zone and try something new (other than what you normally do.) I try to force myself to try a new technique, style or perspective I've never tried before on a weekly basis (I'm traditionally a street and architectural photographer.) It's a great way to exercise your creativity!

Great shot! Very soothing.

Thank you sir! I was dissapointed that I couldn't get anything of the falls just upstream, but I only knew of them for a few hours, so how dissapointed could I really be? :p

Very nice colours and subject.

Thanks! This water always looked murky blue to the naked eye, who knew there was so much green in it?

Did anyone get some shots of the geminid meteor shower last night? I saw around 300 meteors in about 4 hours. Here is a two hour exposure (240 pics stacked) along with the brightest meteor I saw all night.
