Riding the pine.

Wow, I am surprised by all the response to my casual posting of a photo of Ribbon Candy! I had not realized that it is something totally unknown to so many people on either side of the Big Pond -- and how much of a giveaway it is of my advancing age, too (LOL!) as when I was a kid it was commonplace. Now apparently a lot of people even in their 30's or 40's are unfamiliar with it, and to those younger it is totally alien.... Well, as I said, it's not seen in many stores these days, even around holiday time, which is when it was always most popular. Of course one could probably order it from Amazon, as these days one can get just about ANYTHING from Amazon..... :)

MacNut: no, it's not the consistency of taffy; it is much harder and crunchier than taffy.....

I wouldn't draw a lot of conclusions from reactions here.

Christmas Ribbon Candy comes out of that part of the history of confections that is about visual appeal more than about taste. It has been featured in countless photographs. It is a cultural commonplace at least in NY/New England and eastern Canada. I have seen it in England.

Its real place is as a Christmas ornament, and if it is falling out of fashion, it's probably the result of confusing ornamentation with healthy eating. Which, if that's what's happening, is odd. In my experience, adults didn't eat ribbon candy, and nor did older kids. If well made, they just admired the shape, colour and intricacy.

I don't think that my being surprised at comments here exactly equates with "drawing a lot of conclusions." I simply casually posted an image from my archives and then was surprised at the comments because I didn't realize how many people were unfamiliar with ribbon candy. So, not a big deal, just interesting.....

Yes, I think you've hit it on the nail that ribbon candy is far more ornamental than it is a true taste delight, as, well, it just isn't as satisfying as a piece of chocolate would be, for instance. While I wouldn't bother to take a photo of a piece of chocolate, yes, there is something intriguing about the shape and colors of ribbon candy which just begs for a camera to be pulled out, a photo or two shot......

Test shot with a new lens--Sigma 40mm f/1.4. One of my favorite focal lengths--35mm is often too wide and 50mm is too narrow. 40mm is "just right" for many subjects I shoot. This taken @ f/2.

Gorgeous kitty! A Bengal, perhaps?

I think it has been going out of favor in more recent years, as at least it seems harder to find these days, but it used to be very popular in the US and it makes sense that it originated in Europe. The photo I shared was from my archives, not a recent image, and I haven't seen Ribbon Candy available locally in the last several years. I remember it from my childhood, though, where it always seemed to be around. Taste-wise there really isn't much to it; mostly sugar.....

Yep definitely remember from my childhood as well. I didn’t like them though. Looked too slimy for my taste.

I got really behind in December with editing everyday, so I have some work to do to catch up my final P365 collection. But in the meantime, I figured I'd get started on practicing for my P52 of diptychs for 2019. I know the rules are one photo per day, so if you guys would rather I don't post them as diptychs, let me know, and I will separate them to different days. The challenge for me is to shoot one subject in two ways that coordinate. But I don't want to upset the apple cart! :) (Plus it won't be a diptych every single day, just once a week.)

No complaints from me. Interesting challenge you’ve set yourself. I’ll aim for once a month!

I think it will be easier than a photo every day! Also, I tend to be an overshooter, so that will work in my favor for this project!:D

Where did you take that shot from? It’s full of trees on the other side of the market.

That was from the side of the art gallery. There is usually an area with market stalls and some open space at the back of them where you can get a clear shot from.

Nice morning , pretty warm , so I figured I'd try some more duck photography , this time with a bit longer lens . Loads of folks in Central Park , some by the pond with serious photo gear . Anyway , things worked out much better than expected , and I've got January knocked off for my next year's Christmas calendar.

Today's capture: D850, Nikkor 300 f4.0 IF ED AFS with 1.4ii TC shot at 2800 ISO, 1/600, 420mm at f5.6.

My experience shooting wildlife is bit limited, especially with a relatively long lens so my shots are a work in progress.

Thanks for looking and Happy New Year to everyone!

Wow, that will be a challenge indeed, shooting one subject in two ways which coordinate and have a specific relationship! Good luck with it! I daresay you won't get bored, but it could be difficult finding and choosing the subjects. I can understand why you want to shift from 365 days to just 52 weeks of images..... Overall much less time-consuming and taxing!

Posting diptychs works for me.....I have no problem with that. Looking forward to seeing what you create over the next year!
