Pipeline Support.jpg

Going back through some older pictures to post. Alaska Pipeline on supports in an permafrost area. Oil inside is supposed to be 142 degrees, hence the heat dissipaters on the columns. Supports are designed to allow the pipe to move left and right when they open and close valves. in areas where there is no permafrost, the pipe is buried.

Thanks for the explanation: do you work in the field?

.. looking around the apartment this morning for something to photo - saw this little Mexican handcrafted bird (I purchased in Puerto Vallarta several years ago) sitting on a large piece of Canadian, nature-crafted rock (I found during a trail walk somewhere) -- thought they looked good together. Moved it to a spot where I could take a picture.

No, I was working on a new military hospital at Ft. Wainwright in Fairbanks, we were designing all the Communications and Data systems. We were in Fairbanks for meetings and took Sunday off and did a little site seeing. It was just before the beginning of the tourist season and we stopped at an Information Stop next to the pipeline. There were some workers there painting the benches and cleaning up. They took the time to regale some of the stories of the pipeline, like how the pipe would slam from side to side when even they closed a valve. Lot of info on the web about it.

We were up there to inspect finished job when it was extremely cold, we didn't do any sight seeing then! Thanks Sparksd for the cold shot. Our rental car came with an extension cord in the trunk, it was so cold, it was hard to unravel to use the block heater.
