small story about this.
I've been bingewatching "the dark den" on youtube. A channel about spiders, invertebrates and other creepy-crawlies. I have always liked insects by the way, they are nature's robots. Anyhoo, I thought it would be cool to catch a few household/garden insects, and I did. I caught 3 spiders and 2 mantids, all were put in a separate, make-shift, temporary container. I felt so bad about the insects, I let them go in less than 24 hours. You could read the flight or fight reaction on them, especially on the last spider I picked up. That one had a real brain on it. So this is what remains, a vase with some cuttings in it.

Yes I do 99% of my macro work handheld and my lens does
I’ve also recently switched to manual focus. The last two weeks or so.

If it's insects I'll go hand held (and my 105 macro has IS), otherwise tripod 90% of the time.
Also find manual focus is easier for macro work a lot of the time.
You must have a very steady hand!
Hmmm. I’m pretty sure my macro is not a VR lens. I’ve had it since 2010 or so and don’t think that was an option then. I had just switched from Canon then and had to start all over. I know my previous Canon macro lens definitely did not have IS and I tried to buy the equivalent lenses originally when transitioning to Nikon.
But I will check later. I think my only VR lens is my 70-200.
When shooting macro I will crank the ISO to 2500 outside to get a good SS and narrow aperture.
I do macro only hand held...for now
P.S. I have ordered Arsenal assistant which seems to have automated focus stacking/combining feature. https://witharsenal.com/
That will require tripod for sure.

So I was just shooting some bees in the back garden. Realised my VR was off half way through!OH!!!! I *do* have VR on my macro lens! How did I not know that????

Yes, no and kind of. A high pass filter by itself works on guys and more masculine women, it gives off a gritty high contrast look and in the case of this particular shot would not work.
