Bus

Taken in Honolulu, HI with the Canon 10-22. I Wish it was a faster lens, but oh well! Does anyone have hands on experience with the tokina 11-16 2.8?

Well, it's always fun to play with light and water, and the results can be stunning. But the sun in this pic is blown out to a big white 'hole' in the image... which only serves to emphasise that digital (and film before it...) cannot reconcile such extreme lighting conditions (and, 99% of the time, HDR is no real help). Sometimes we have to accept that we're asking our expensive cameras and lenses to do something that's simply not possible... and try to work within the limitations of our equipment instead...

i know.. the sun couldn't be saved.. -.- no filter.
how would i go about not having the sun blown out?

There isn't a filter on the market that will reconcile such extreme lighting. The foreground in your shot is black; the sun itself is white. That's extreme...

When I'm shooting, I just accept that some things won't work. If plan A doesn't work, then it's time for plan B. The water in your pic is beautifully lit.; you could zoom on that area. Or... you could wait while the sun is hidden (or partly hidden) behind a cloud. You could then include it in the pic area without it appearing as a big white blob.

My point is that there isn't always a hi-tech solution to a photographic problem... ;)

True, no doubt.

Though I like the picture. I tried cropping it - remove the upper part of the sky including the sun, and most of the lower black. Result is very wide, but looks magical.

I see i see.
Thanks for the tips. I'll keep in mind those tips.
I knew the sun was the problem after i took the picture, but didn't resort another plan.

Clickable...

I like this one more and more... there's always something about light playing through water drops that I love. It would make a great desktop image... anyway, good job on this. :)

By popular demand... (due to obstacles at my shooting location an image combining both the city scape and the water were not possible, but here is one of the water between the trees from last evening's shoot)

Now this one is also really nice... love the exposure. But... in this case I actually would crop about a third to half of the sky for a couple of reasons: the sky is actually getting lighter, more featureless the higher up you go, so it doesn't add anything up there... and second, it would give the image approx. a third as sky, a third as mountains, and a third as water... a very good balance. It would also be a bit more panoramic, which would work really nicely in this photo, in my opinion. :) But, that's really a minor critique for a really beautiful shot.

I love this. Excellent exposure, very sharp. It makes me feel like I'm right there. I really prefer it to the fisheye version you posted earlier because it doesn't make all the trees look as if they're going to fall into the center like that one did. This is a truly beautiful photo!! Pentax's certainly produce great images... in the right hands. :)

I like this.. I live in oregon too it give some nice scenery once i awhile I just dont have the proper camera to capture it.

I love this!!

Thanks... I really appreciate your comment. :)
Your photo reminded me of this Bateman print: http://www.robertbateman.ca/paintings/SuddenBlizzardRTHawk.htm nice job.
Thanks for the compliment... :)

I'm still in pre-post mindset, thinking of how to approach this. Not sure if this is the take I'll use, and still plan to add a second artist into the right side of the frame. At this stage, still testing out various post approaches, so seeing what your general opinion was to the look of this
