Yes you can't beat local knowledge. Can't get much more local than the back garden.
Every time I got the camera out the bees disappeared. When I put it away, out they came. This was the only shot I managed to get.

Shame about the noise though. Really heavy crop, high ISO or some over processing AFB?
It's tricky with the X100 series isn't it. Couldn't live without my X100 though. Here's a bit of separation at F2.8 for you on mine

I just read that the x100s has a built-in ND filter..! that's kinda cool (not trying to demote the x100)

Combination. 800 ISO, heavily cropped and my dodgy LR skills! I should have gone inside and switched lenses but these guys didn't hang around for long.
The old timeball at Semaphore, South Australia. The ball at the top of the tower used to be raised and then dropped to signal a time mark for the ships in the bay. It was in service from the 1870's until the 1930's and it still goes off everyday at 1PM, just because it can.

Beautiful Moose...this is your best yet. I'm not sure where the side light is coming from (car?) but I think it really adds a nice touch to what would already be a great shot.
Thanks, AFB. The first was taken from further away (about 3.5 meters, through a window), and I didn't want to get too aggressive with the cropping, so I tried to do something a little different with the feeder. I like it, but prefer the second image myself, as well.
Thanks, Peter. No flash in yesterday's or today's (although I have some in the works). Just a quick shutter speed (1/1000) and a little luck with catching the wings at one of the extremes.
Depending on how close you were able to get, I think you can actually get a better reproduction ratio out of the 18-55 than the 70-300 (because of the minimum focusing distance).

That light is from a house on that side of the road, and a truck. I had to remove both from the photo, but left the light across the road alone.

Lucky. When it comes to taking photos of the Auroras it's a guessing game
I usually drive a few miles toward the hills surrounding Fairbanks, Alaska, where the air is clearer, and there aren't street lights nearby. But the night I took that photo the Auroras were extremely bright, and right over my house. I just stepped to the street and took several horizontal and vertical photos of that individual Aurora, and all look about the same (a beam of light on the sky following the road's direction). I just had to make sure that the camera was level.

The X100 has it too and it is very cool as it allows wide open shooting in bright sunlight. It's one if the reasons I can't bring myself to sell it after buying the XE1.
It looks like the JPEG breaking down due to too much clarity/sharpening. Happens to me too when I'm trying to recover a picture. Shows that we both still have a way to go when it comes to getting the actual shot right.

I rather like this photo's colors & composition as well, but what I like the most, is the slender crop, it gives something to this photo that the original frame did not.
