Welcome to Photo of the Day. The POTD thread was started by iGary in May, 2006 and converted to a monthly thread in November 2007 by Arn. POTD is one of the most popular picture groups on MacRumors, often exceeding 500 posts and 20,000 views per month.
Photo of the Day is intended to be a showcase for your best pictures. There is no limit to your gear, just your imagination. P&S and film cameras are welcome along with DSLRs. There are no themes like the Weekly Contest, and no winners (or losers) either.
POTD Thread Policies

  • One Photo per Day - Don't post more than one photo each day. Diptychs, triptychs, etc. are OK.
  • All photos should be your own work unless special circumstances have been agreed.
  • Multi-Quote - To comment on several photos, click the "+ (Multi-Quote) button. This puts all your comments in one post. Multi-Quoting is required on all of the MacRumors forums.
  • Safe for Work (SFW) only - This is a site-wide rule. If you wouldn't show it in a public place, then it's NSFW (not safe for work). Think before you post.
  • Describe your photo - Tell what it is and where you took it. If you know the EXIF data of a photo, include it. The following EXIF fields are recommended: Camera, ISO, Focal Length, Shutter/Aperture and Lens.
  • Note: Anyone may start the Photo of the Day thread on the first of the month GMT. Please copy a quote of this post to maintain all the formatting.
  • Please don't alter or expand these policies - If you think they need improvement, use a separate thread to discuss.
  • Past POTD threads from August 2013 onwards can be seen here
  • Earlier POTD threads thru July 2013 can be seen here

Happy March. Cute legend of the heroic women of Gruyere (yes the town where the famous cheese originated) during a conflict with neighbouring cantons. EDIT: Forgot to post that this photo was taken in the Gruyere castle during an excursion with our spring students.

The brave women of Gruyères

Known to be kind-hearted, the women of Gruyères were also blessed with a fertile imagination. It was proven beyond doubt during one of the battles the Counts endured against the Bernese and Fribourgers.

One day, having torched the Château of Tour-de-Trême, the enemy was marching triumphantly to Sothau, forcing the bold yet outnumbered montagnards into retreat. With time running out, a valiant decision would have to be made...

All of a sudden, the invaders let out a horror-stricken cry and fled. What had they seen? A fantastic throng. A nameless savage horde stampeded headlong out of the town and into the plain. The reinforcement's uniforms were unrecognizable through the dust, distance and evening fog, but their helmets were adorned with flames. At this, the enemy shouted, "Run for your life; run before the fire of war is rekindled, stoking our adversaries' courage and lighting the way to our defeat and death!"

The surviving Gruyèriens, with no one left to battle, now nearly died laughing. Neither general nor private was to be found among their saviours, who in fact consisted of a heard of goats! The women of Gruyères had hastily assembled the "troops", hung heavy bells on their necks, attached candles or torches to their horns, and sent them running in blinded fright toward Epagny where the enemy was routed. As the women's strategic genius sank in, the men of Gruyères sang in unison, "Long live our wives and sisters!"

Shot near Victor Colorado. Late 1980s just about the time that Golden Cycle started milling all the tailings piles from the old gold mines. Originally shot on Fujicolor 100 35mm film.

Golden Cycle kindly gave me permission to shoot at will as long as I stayed out of the way of the heavy equipment.

Best viewed at full resolution.

Untitled 3.jpg

Someone fishing at a pier in Tamsui, northern Taiwan, despite there being a "no fishing" sign right outside the picture! I posted a very similar shot back in May last year, which was in fact another frame on the same roll of film, but that earlier post was a film scan, while this one is a dark room print I just made. Shot with a Nikon FE on Ilford Ortho+ metered at ASA 100, and printed on Ilford Multigrade RC Deluxe Satin 3.5×5" photo paper.

This is my first post on POTD; My white bengal “Casper” fell asleep in a light ray creating some very aesthetic photo opportunities.

This was shot on my iPhone 16 Pro in portrait mode, with photographic styles (and some minor post photo op. brightness, contrast, and saturation tweaks)

I love how this came out, and I’m more and more impressed by what a reasonably experienced photographer can squeeze out of these tiny cameras.
(It helps when your subject is this unreasonably adorable)
