Went looking for shadows...

I was looking for interesting hard shadows yesterday, and thought I might have a look at an old cemetery on the outskirts of the city.

Of all the images, this one really moved me the most. I deliberately kept it dark, it's a dark topic.

Went looking for shadows, came out with too many questions...
What the hell are we doing that we still haven't learnt from this, some seventy years on... 🙁

So, I'm not a pro by any means. Beautiful model lovely location... but is the focus soft ? Maybe it's my Mac's monitor or it could be my aging eyes. And I'm thinking a tad of fill on her shadow side? But the hair, the expression the location all work well.

The original was a touch soft, but flickr's resizing has done something odd, in addition to the fact that it always, always bumps the contrast by a half-grade, destroying subtle shadow detail.

I'll re-upload, tonight.

Yup, the shutter fired by accident. I'm waiting to sell the shot to Microsoft, for $$$, as their default desktop image... 😛

A MS desktop image was my first reaction, too. Then I wondered if it was an accidental shutter fire.

Monterey Cypress and the fog - always beautiful. Nicely captured. I'm curious - have you tried rendering this in B&W?

Thanks for the compliment and the B&W suggestion. I added a quick B&W version to the original post. C&C welcome.

This particular photograph was shot with a Canon 60D and Sigma 17-50 2.8 at f/11

I am debating whether I want to trade that Sigma for a Canon 17-40L. You see, the Sigma has been good to me but more and more I'm growing dissatisfied with soft corners. Also, I am planning on going for a full frame camera (eventually at least) and that lens will not work with a FF camera.

Interesting. Thanks for all that info. You have some awesome pics on smugmug!
