Photos and videos

I am new to my Mac Book Pro 13 but have an iPhone SE and an iPad Air. I can import photos and videos to the Mac but where do they go?

I want to edit them and then back them up to an external hard drive.

The photos I've just cut and pasted are only thumbnails, I seem to have lost the original 4mb files.

Any help,would be appreciated. Thanks

Did you download them through iTunes, photos or image capture?

I copied them across from the iPhone via usb cable

When you connect the iPhone it should give you the option to import them into photos use that option.
