RAW + JPEG handling

I'm a bit confused - I gave Photos a chance and imported some images from my Fuji X-T1. I have JPEG+RAW configured in my camera, so I get two versions on my SD card.

As soon as I import that, it seems like I can only access the JPEG version inside Photos. There's an icon showing up "J" that shows me that it's an JPEG and it looks like there's an icon hidden under that - as if it suggests there are multiple versions of that image (that's the case...).

As soon as I only import a RAW file, the RAW version shows up fine in Photos, it just seems like the app detects if there are multiple versions and hides the RAW if that's the case.

I made some screenshots to clarify what I mean, I hope somebody has an idea, as I couldn't figure out what's happening :)

Thanks for your time!

I was thinking of doing the following, since I have a few hundred GB of RAW photos in my Aperture library.

1) Make all photos that are RAW referenced, with the originals in a "masters" directory on a disk that I keep backed up. This will basically archive all my old RAWs.

2) Convert the resulting much smaller Aperture library to Photos.

3) Turn iCloud Photo Library on.

Anyone know what will happen if I do this? Will the referenced RAWs be uploaded to iCloud? Can the generated previews still be seen on iOS devices?

I think that only managed photos can be synced via iCloud Photo Library. I would imagine that IPL would just ignore the RAW files, and any associated data related to them. Unless you had JPEG pairs or something similar, which IPL would just treat as original photos.

And you could just selectively consolidate RAWs as the need arose.

Is there no way to sort photos by filename, date, etc.? Doesn't seem to be and if that's the case it is utterly ridiculous! What are they thinking (or not thinking)?

When I import photos they just end up randomly sorted with previous photos.

Sorting photos within albums is half-baked and it doesn't seem like it will get corrected before the official release. This is driving me nuts, and seems like such an easy fix.

I was somehow able to sort the photos in the "All Photos" album by date by clicking on the View menu as the program was loading. Normally this option is grayed out for me.

And I can get other albums to sort by date, but unlike with iPhoto, this order does not stick when the pictures are transferred to my iDevices/iCloud.

Double click the photo to view it, then hit edit.

Then, go into the Image menu and click "Use RAW as original". This will switch to using the RAW file in the RAW/JPG pair.

Yes, having to go into edit mode first is unintuitive, and probably should be fixed. A better way would be to have a button in the edit interface to switch, and get rid of the menu item in the "Image" menu that only works when editing.

Ah - thanks so much!

After trying for hours I saw this menu option, but I could never figure out where it's active. Let's hope that's just a beta "hidden" feature :)

I'm hoping the next release is more about polishing and improving the UI, as there's a few unintuitive issues with it.

Also, there needs to be a way to "stack" related photos into a "burst". It's amusing because Photos recognizes bursts as stacks, but stacks from Aperture aren't imported correctly and there's no way to stack existing photos.

"optimize storage" on iPhone

I've just started using iCloud Photo Library and so far it's unclear to me how the "optimize storage" option works, especially on the iPhone. How does it control which images are stored locally on the device, and which are stored in the cloud? When my local photo storage reaches a certain amount, does it automatically upload them to the cloud to save space? If so, what is the ceiling?

I ask this because I'm worried if I keep using IPL and continue shooting photos on my iPhone and never delete any of them for years to come, how full will my iPhone be? Storage anxiety is a real thing!

If anyone has any knowledge or similar experience, please share!

Thank you!

I fail to see how Photos is useful if we don't get the function of sorting properly. I want to import photos from old or other devices and want to be able to see them on my phone. But I cannot sort them by time created, only by time added, which makes Photos useless since I want to add photos into All Photos without disturbing the flow of the album. And I am aware of other users wanting to sort by size, name, etc. They need to add sorting into the app or else it would be a giant inconvenience, rendering the app useless.

Sorting by date works fine for me, all my photos in collections are organised by date taken not added so possibly something your not doing right

How were you able to select sorting by date in Photos? The only option I have seen is under the View menu, and it's greyed out all the time.

Don't have to click on anything? If you have the time/date set correctly on your iPhone and cameras etc then they should automatically be in "date/time taken" order under the photos tab. All my photos are sorted in correct order without me having to do anything.

Ah, there's the difference. The majority of the photos/images in my library were scanned in and I manually adjusted the date in iPhoto. I don't want Photos to sort by the date entered, which makes little sense for scanned images, but rather by the date the image was taken. I can do this without difficulty in iPhoto, but it appears to be impossible in Photos, a serious missing capability.

I don't see that Apple is going to update the itune anytime soon and the New Photo app break the itune sync to my iphone.

I have been not able to sync my photos to iphone till now.

Just new to the Photos app but it appears there is no way to edit a photo in an external editor. Is this correct?

Also, I have Aperture installed and it was sharing the iPhoto library. It seems Aperture can still share the existing iPhoto Library but cannot access the new Photos library. If this is the case, it makes it an awkward process to edit an image in Pixelmator for example. I previously used iPhoto as my organising tool to store photos but would use Aperture when more involved work was required on images knowing I can also edit an image using Pixelmator.
I'm fine with using Photos for importing and storing my images but to edit beyond what Photos offers, I would need to export the image and work on it in Pixelmator but then re import the edited image unless I am missing something?

My experience of it is there is a fatal flaw in the way in the way it optimises space.

My wife has a 16gb iPhone and we have a 75gb photo library. The library was taking up 6gb of space on her phone at one point which meant that she had filled her space and couldn't take more videos while we were out.

There is no manual way to free up the space.

When we got home I downloaded a large gaming app, 2gb I think it was, and even though the phone was full the photo library cleared down to 1.5gb instantly as I started the download.

This is great but it needs to allow for the clean up of the library when you take video or photos, not just when you download apps.
