Why do we need another? They're all within 5 minutes of each other by train and less than 4 blocks of walking after the train.

It's at least a 15-20 minute subway trip from the Apple store in Soho to the cube in midtown, and 20-25 minutes with 2 subways between Soho and the Meatpacking district shop-in-progress. I wish all the locations were 5 minutes apart! :)

Too bad the NYC subway system can be as efficient as a bowel movement while wearing a wet suit or else those figures would be accurate. :p

I kid. Anyway, this store is in a much better spot for me than the one up on Fifth avenue.

Oh, I realize I was being extremely optimistic with those time estimates. :p I bought my Macbook at the 5th Ave store on a Friday at 2AM or so, and I believe that it took my friend and I a solid 70-80 minutes to get from there back home to Brooklyn on the Q (perhaps 3 stops into the borough, at most). Torturous, especially when one's holding a brand-new laptop. :apple:

I've traveled between Soho and Central Park South/West many of times and once on the W you're at the 5th avenue station from Prince in like 10 minutes tops.

please more to Toronto

Wow, 3rd NY store?

We Torontonians will fight for a 4th store.
Preferably in Mississauga.

To be fair, this is the 4th NYC store. There's one in SI, but this is the third one in Manhattan. Take that, Canada.

Why a store that big??? Apple doesn't have that MANY products?? I mean, with one store they're cool... mac mini, mac pros, mac books, ipods and iphone...anything else beside the accesories? something is fishy around here;)

Well, where else would steve be able to debut the giant white cube supercomputer, simply dubbed "i".

They DO applecare service at the 59th street store.

There's also a store in Long Island which is just about as far away as the Staten Island one. So really that would be 5 locations. Plus we won't count Tekserve, plus that new Apple-related store in Brooklyn, as well as all the other mac dealers...and NJ (which isn't far away). Yeah, we do have a lot of choice :D

What I would like to see is a report of which store generate the most $$$$ then we all will probaly understand why the Island of Manhattan have so many stores.

Now why would an apple store be in/near a meat packing district? Is that just a code word or do people literally pack meat next door to this up and coming apple store?

I don't know it this is true or not but on one of the ny news at 5 they were talking about how the rent is 6millon a year. anyone else heard this. man it really must be worth it to put a 3rd one in the city.

I wish large corporations would be so kind as to look into other locations for their retail outlets than in only New York. I have nothing against New York, but why do so many companies choose to establish a retail outlet in only New York?

I live in Los Angeles, I know it's a big city, but we could definitely use a few more :apple: Stores. Especially ones that most of us don't need to use a freeway to arrive at one.

I'm assuming that your local news was talking about the one on 5th Ave.

Denver already has 4 stores, one more than NYC will once this opens. At least Apple acknowledges that there is something between the east and west coasts. :)

tell me about it... 2 apple stores in all of Canada... one on the outskirts of Toronto, and the other conveniently located in Laval (north of montreal)...

Actually there are currently four Apple stores in Canada ... three in Toronto (one downtown) and one in Laval, which is a large suburb of Montreal (but rather far from downtown).

There are none in Vancouver or Ottawa, respectively Canada's 3rd and 4th largest cities and both markets with a significant technology industry. That makes Apple's retail absence from those markets all the more puzzling. It's not just that they're big cities, it's that they have the kinds of folks who would buy Macs.

In the case of Vancouver, metro population just over two million, it has no Apple stores while Seattle, two hours away by car and roughly the same size, has four stores in the metro area. (Maybe they just did that to tweak you know who?) Meanwhile, Palm Beach County FL, pop 1.5 million, where the largest city (West Palm) has only 250,000, boasts three Apple stores ... amid lots of folks who think computers exist solely to embarrass them in front of their grandchildren.

So saying that "of course NYC could use more stores," or that they need to place stores in large population centers, kind of misses the point. There are at least half a dozen Apple stores in the NYC metro area; after this one opens, three of 'em will be in Manhattan. Meanwhile, other, quite large metro areas with attractive markets for Apple are completely unserved.

Well I'm happy since my nearest Apple Store is only 5 miles away. But I don't see the need for yet another store in new york.

Now why would an apple store be in/near a meat packing district? Is that just a code word or do people literally pack meat next door to this up and coming apple store?

The entire district was once, literally, a meat-packing district: blood ran in the gutters, the place reeked to high heavens, etc. There are two meat packers remaining on the far west side of the area, but it is now filled with high-end boutiques, velvet-rope clubs, and "hot" restaurants.

As to why/how this happened, I won't bore the board with the a discussion of Manhattan real estate, but the Meat Packing District has the authentic "charms" that turned SoHo, TriBeCa, et al into major commercial hubs (original cobblestone streets, interesting building stock).

It'll be cool having an Apple store nearby but I'd rather have Western Beef back :(

I'm really surprised that NYC only has 2 Apple stores at present.

Here in Milwaukee we currently have one, with a second due to open (with in about 500 yards of where I live - Yippee!) later this year.

So Milwaukee will have two and we are a lot smaller than NYC.
