I have several programs that I use with Photos - some as extensions, some using the Edit With command and some using the extension External Editor for Photos. As Apple still does not support the RAW files from my camera, I have been converting the files to Adobe DNG and then saving them as RAW/JPEG pairs in Photos. However, if the photo (either the RAW or JPEG file) is edited in any external program, I can no longer switch between the RAW and JPEG file unless I revert back to the original.

Is this standard with Photos when using third party programs - regardless of how they are accessed by Photos - or is something going wrong?

Thanks

This is expected behavior. The interface for third party apps and Photos requires the extension return a jpeg when complete. Photos seems to treat this file as the final version (Apple is being Apple)

It is not the case with Raw Power as an extension or standalone. It returns a .raw (in my case .nef) file. For my amateur workflow, Raw Power + Photos is the most streamlined (and cheapest) solution

Raw power is an exception to the rule because of the developer’s knowledge of inner workings. But there are also limitations in using the Photos back-end exclusively.

Not sure I understand. If you use the RAW Power extension, why would it return it a raw since that's what you want to edit? I thought it just showed an edited JPEG in Photos like other extensions, and left the raw in Photos where it started.

As I understand ... Raw Power (as an extension or standalone) accesses the Photos library. It doesn't "take out and send back". It just developes the raw file, you make the adjustements and "save".

This also why you can create folders and albums and add flags and ratings in Raw Power as a standalone, which will show in Photos. It works only with the Photos system library, as far as I know.

I know it's not an absolute Aperture substitute, but is the closest Dam I found.

I also use Affinity as an extension. Same thing : it developes the raw file ... but is not as well integrated in Photos. Some time adjustements don't follow back. That's why I use it as standalone, save as .png and import back in Photos for Dam

With my new iPhone taking really good pictures, I also decided to declutter my workflow. I used to have a LR-library for my Canon EOS, then I would also take photos with the phone and literally sometimes just swap the best files in both ways: From the phone to Lightroom for final editing or edited camera photos to the phone for social media.

Finally decided to pay for iCloud, now in the process of moving everything from the phone there and import my stuff from Lightroom. Will just do the management with Photos and iCloud and do the editing with RAW Power. Seems to be the most streamlined solution. Also as there is RAW Power for iPhone (and iPad if I decide to get one at some point)

And it seems like, is Affinity kind of a cheap, but professional PS-replacement? The window looks somewhat similar and it got these layers and stuff.
