Within the new Photos app in iOS 10, there's a tab called "Memories," which curates various photos and videos you've taken in the past into specific memory collections. Without any steps required on your part, Memories gives you an automatic homemade movie from these past family gatherings or vacations, but thanks to a few editing tools, you can also tweak each memory to your liking (note all steps are in portrait mode, although landscape is available).

Navigate to Photos to find the new "Memories" tab in the center of the app, where you can scroll through your personally curated list of memories and choose whichever one you wish to edit and share. Within each detailed memory view, you'll find a list of all the photos and videos contained in the memory (tap "Show all" to see more than a summary), the geographic location the pictures were taken, nearby photos, and related memories you might be interested in.

The last two options at the very bottom let you favorite the memory or delete it permanently. Although the "Select" option on this page might seem like an option to remove photos only from this memory, it should be noted that deleting any content through this method will delete it from your iPhone and iCloud Photo Library, not only the memory. Jump to the instructions for "complex memory editing" below to discover how to delete photos and videos only from the memory, as well as add more.

I'm still waiting for photos to analyze my photo library 600 gigabytes, 90k photos. It's taking forever. Have had iPad docked for 24 hours. Only 20k are analyzed.

"Personally curated" lol. Some algorithm guesstimates which photos to put in an album, gives it a meaninglessly generic name and invariably gets it somewhat or totally wrong so I have to manually edit it anyway.

Another junk feature.

Photos does not have the memories tab.
iOS 10.0.1 iPhone 5

Please tell me I'm doing something wrong. Or is this an iPhone 5 only 'feature'?

So, as far as I can work out, there is no way of removing photos from a memory without deleting the photo?

If so, what were Apple thinking!

Hi,

My iPad 4th generation does not have the memories tab either. And no People album. Can someone confirm this is a limitation of the iPad 4 and iPhone 5?

Thanks,

I read on another thread that the device needs to be 64 bit for memories function but can find not confirmation on Apple's site.

Gonna get some good use out of this feature. My Photos collection is over 42,000 pictures now. This is a really nice way of quickly putting together a nice selection from an event.

Definitely some misfires (for example photos saved from Whatsapp conversations make it into some videos) but overall pretty good first effort.

Does anyone know if it's possible to edit People in iOS 10? For example, I merged some identified faces, then realised some of them are different people: it'd be nice to be able to remove them.

Nope and thank you for confirming my point ("not 100%").

Let me edit my comment and ask a good question.

What would you have done differently and what features do you like from the new software?

I believe if you go to Albums -> People and remove the pictures assigned to those people it will work. You can also "confirm" any additional photos it believes to contain that specific person.

You could use Google Photos instead, it has the exact same functionality. All the processing is done in the cloud, which is either a positive or a negative, depending on how you feel about that.

I use it because of the unlimited photo storage it provides (for slightly resized photos).

Is there any estimate as to how long it takes Memories to do an initial scan? I realize it depends on how many photos it has to go through. Does the phone need to be plugged into a power source to scan?

Plugged in and turned off.
As it goes through the scan process you can turn phone back on and look at the photo apps and you will see progress screen with how many photos have been scanned so far.
But to continue with the scan it has to be plugged in and turned off.

Yes GREAT.....have an album of 212 pictures.....max in time is 48 seconds! And no way to make that longer!
