Well, let's take a logic guess.

If they release an iPad Mini it has to be cheaper than the 10" version.
That means $449 or less. Apple don't price after competitors, they focus on their own products. Soo:
iPad 10" 16GB: $499
iPod Touch 4" 32GB: $299
Where will it fit?

If they choose a retina display that means higher production costs and in my opinion they will go for the same resolution as the 10" iPad because they don't want the developers to develop for yet another resolution. It's one of Apple's big strengths compared to the competition that the developers can stick to a minimum of resolutions. Sometimes it needs adjustment(as with the bigger screen on the iPhone 5 and iPod 4"), but that's the natural development.

My guess is maybe a $299 8GB iPad Mini with retina display and the same processing power as the 10" iPad has now.

That $299 8gb retina would be good enough for me

But the 16gb is the default for new apple Idevices

new ipod touch $299 (same internals as ipad 2)
ipad mini $??? (same internals as ipad 2)
ipad 2 $399

lol so three devices with almost same internals seems a bit odd

Black back? Carbon Fiber, maybe? Or like the iPhone 5? Really hard to tell by those pictures but the back doesn't look like it's been milled out of aluminum, like the iPhone parts. Maybe it's just stamped aluminum like the full size iPads. Just my opinion.

Original article also says "will be announced Oct 17 and released Nov 2." Can't wait!!!

Presumably it will use the same finish as the inbound iPod Touch. we're yet to see how durable that is, but I imagine with a bevelled edge rather than the chamfered corner of the iPhone, the scuffing will be a lot less prominent.

At the right price, I'd be interested. My mom has been wanting an iPad for the longest time but didn't want to spend the entry price for one because she didn't really want one that bad. But with this at a price of, say $199 or $299, it'd be a rather attractive purchase to have a little tablet around the house.

Forget $199, doubt that's gonne happen! APPLE just won't release 'Cheap Stuff'. If it has up-to-date tech, there's no way it'll be less than $249-$299. Or with Retina -which seems like a must- even more. At those lower prices, there'd be little incentive to get an iPodTouch.

Apple doesn't have to match competitors to beat them on price. They just have to be in the neighborhood. An iPad mini at $299 would be close enough to steal Kindle customers because of superior quality.

I guess the question is: Is it going to be a smaller iPad 3, or a smaller iPad 2? If it's a smaller iPad 2, then it's not up-to-date tech, and I don't see it selling at a high price.

My guess is those cutouts are there purely to locate and seat components.... there are certainly no holes on the second picture and the shading is slightly darker than the white table its on.

If this is indeed deemed to be true in the near future, then I wonder what is going on at Apple. During the Steve Jobs era, we didn't nearly have as many leaked parts as we have now. Infact, I cannot remember any of the iPhones leaking parts and details SO accurate before an iPhone launch. I mean we did see the final build of what the iPhone 5 was going to look like since mid summer.

Now with the exception of the iPhone 4, considering the iPhone 4 Was "accidentally" left In a bar, and was later deemed to be the legit successor to the 3GS. However, even then we did not know much about the device except that it was obviously a new design, improved screen and a front facing camera. Most of the details were brought to light during the conference which despite seeing it before the apple event, people were still amazed at the device. Looking at the iPhone 5 and how we knew every little detail about it prior to launch, very few people were impressed considering we all knew what apple was going to unveil

They have e-mail in Brazil. The kind of e-mail where one can attach files, like digital photos.

Brazil? Never heard of it, but it sounds like they use some kind of sorcery.

Interesting theory. Several of us said right up front the rear shell looked plastic, but then the logic of needing an "antennae cutout" didn't make much sense ... unless it's what you say, then the rear could certainly be some kind of non-signal blocking material. :)

I think it's simply as Apple gets bigger, the manufacturing infrastructure does too, meaning more potential for leaks. Plus, Apple news is big business, so leaks can be profitable (and more so every year as they grow).

Ultimately, maybe Tim Cook/management isn't even all that concerned about it: free press, fires up in the industry, and does it really cause any change in the sales? I'd figure when/if it changes from a few weeks from free press to corporate secrets getting leaked impacting sales then they'll get _very_ serious about it.

So we have one baseless rumour stating they are being made in Brazil and then this story of apparent parts including ones that look like they are from the Kindle Fire that have come from an Asian factory.
And you wonder why we're sceptical?

yep. perhaps you should read Jim Dalrymple, insider extraordinaire -- he's confirming what other insider writer John Gruber has suggested...that there will be an Oct. event where the Mini is announced.

http://www.loopinsight.com/2012/08/23/iphone-5-and-ipad-mini-events/

even mainstreamer WSJ just published that units are in production. it's happening. and only the strange sort that cant envision anyone using something they arent currently using are the ones to keep their heads in the sand.

and if youre curious *why* its happening, read here about pricing umbrellas:

...it's not the cure to cancer. just a product roadmap that makes sense.

I'm having a hard time understanding the why the cutouts are there. If you look at the second pic (of the rear shell), there appears to be no cutouts?

Probably because they are not cutouts but stickers.
Look how bright the button cutouts are compared to the stickers (Or Tape)

Range of iPad Mini's in the same colours as the new iPod Touch?

Or maybe just all black and all white models with no silver back? That's a departure from previous leaks.

Very interesting.

There won't be "retina" display for iPad mini (source) which makes it a 7" tablet with one of the worst screens on the market (among top tablets). It's not going to be competitive on specs. It;s not going to be competitive on price either and if the rumors about $99 Google Nexus tablet materialize, iPad Mini will have no future whatsoever.

I believe that assessment to be very pessimistic. With or without Retina, if an iPad mini materializes, which seems hard to doubt now, I believe it will be hugely successful, even at a significantly higher price point than the rumored $99 NEXUS you quote. Price, although factoring in, is not the ONLY determining factor for most people. APPLE has proven that beyond doubt the last few years.

I was thinking maybe those precious few mm might help to squeeze some components in as they're shrinking the whole thing. Who knows :)

Well it's still a myth until Apple announce the device and as for your pricing umbrella story, all it is is someones opinion based on their ides, no facts at all. It's not different then a member of these forums writing it and stating oh look they should sell an iPad Mini for $200 because they need to...

Until it happens it is not fact, and they aren't going to sell it for $200. It's an imaginary dream to think they will.
